The brief time in my life when I was actually skinny stands out as the worst drought in Nookie I can remember.

I'd rather be happy and have a decent chance for Tang, than skinny and have a horrible chance at Tang.

I know I like me my womens with meat on the bone then some skinny chick with bones and ribs sticking out everywhere.

People are ridiculously concerned about their weight and appearance to others.

Sickeningly superficial.

I'd doubt it would make a huge amount of difference, although maybe you'd feel the cold less. You don't mention the water situation. Without sufficient fluids, I shouldn't imagine either would survive longer than the other.

It's all a great conspiracy?

No great conspiracy, but it could be a case of being "creative" with the numbers when it comes to issues about health.

For instance, they give numbers for preventable deaths. Are they including avid cyclists in great shape who got hit by a car while riding their bike? I'd imagine that joggers or cyclists have a much greater chance of being hit by a car than porkers who watch TV all day, due to the amount of exposure to traffic they have.

People who are mildly overweight might tend to be less likely to be a risk-taker, not participating in many outdoor activities or strenuous exercize. They might not be as healthy, but they might be less likely to get killed.

I'm not doubting the CDC's new statistics but...

I thought minimal caloric intake has been recently cited (over the past 10 years) to prolong your life a good deal? For example the Japanese elders in Okinawa have an abnormally high life expectancy average--more centurians than anywhere else (I think) on the planet. It was largely contributed to their minimal caloric intake. Take in slightly less than the body requires every day.

Didn't they show this with other research too? I know rats != people but didn't they find that with both rats and primates that the cell life is like 50% longer with minimal caloric intake? Activity was up and hair did not grey etc etc.

Just something that kind of goes against chubby being healthier.....

I'm sure they are not including accidental deaths.

At any rate, this is MULTIPLE studies. Not just one. It was the overwhelming evidence from multiple, independent studies that forced the CDC to reevaluate their previously alarmist findings.

You seem to have a preconceived notion about this, and are trying to bend the facts to fit it. Sorry, it's not working.

My roomate is too thin. He is about 5'10" and weighs probably around 110 lbs, maybe closer to 100.

Honestly, what is your problem? In many threads I've agreed with you, yet you have this horrible, nasty tone to your posts. You seem to always be on the attack.

Is it possible for you to enter a discussion and have an opposing viewpoint with someone without raising the hostility level?

In addition, you're the one with the preconceived notion about this. You've already stated that you're moderately overweight and it's in your best interest to believe the new findings. I bust my ass to be healthy and athletic, and 15-20% bodyfat is not athletic by any means. I'm naturally flabby, so it takes a lot of work for me to get into shape. And I do it. I could take the easy way out and just claim that being 15-20% bodyfat is healthy for me. It wouldn't make me any less of a lardass, though.

BMI is a huge load of crap. I'm 5'6" and between 150 and 155 lbs which makes me borderline "Overweight" but my body fat is easily below 20%. It really only works for people who are sedentary.

He is about to turn 22. Basically he hardly eats anything and pretty much does not do any physical activity at all and watches lots of tv (likes the sci-fi channel). He is a very weak guy and really skinny, I would much rather be what I am - 6'1" 165lbs. But we have been best friends since he was in kindergarden, I used to be quite bigger than him when we were younger and any time we would get in an argument I would show him who was boss ;)

Oh yeah, he has a twin brother of the same build too.

Tell him you plan to smack him around daily until he weighs more than 125lbs. 5'10" and 110lbs on an adult male is waaaay too thin.

1. I'm not over weight by any means

2. 15-20% IS healthy for a male and it happens to be the range I fall in when bulking. When I cut I go down to 10%. A male is not considered "overweight" unless they have higher then 20% body fat.

3. I am very athletic. This pic is at the fattest I ever am while bulking:

I bet I look better with a shirt off than you. Don't kill the messenger.
Just about everybody I know could benefit health and looks wise if they lost 10 pounds. There is certainly no danger of a skinny epedemic starting in this country anytime soon.
I will definitely agree with that. Thinking of everyone in my personal life and even strangers on the street I can think of about five-ten people that would not look better by losing more fat, and pretty well everybody else would benefit from it (say another 90).
I thought minimal caloric intake has been recently cited (over the past 10 years) to prolong your life a good deal?
There's a lot of anecdotal evidence to point to that but I haven't heard of a proper study looking at it, because very few people are willing to undergo such a thing for years on end, and if you look at a group of people in Okinawa any number of factors could be causing their longevity.

Go back in time and fat is attractive :)

its very true. Kings and queens were always fat as a result of the fact that they had the best and most food available to them. To be skinny meant you were poor and weak.

I don't know if fat was ever attractive, I think it's more of a matter of a woman's view that a fat rich guy is more attractive than an athletic poor guy.

No, back in the middle ages fat was definitely considered attractive for a female because it implied wealth and/or the ability to have children

Yes I think it was legitimately attractive, and not just as an indicator of wealth, or even health.

LOL, I'm not pissed. Sorry if I came off that way.
