Being a waiter sucks...

worked 4 hours tonight...made a whopping $7 after tip-shares. That coupled with my $3.09 an hour brings me to about...$18. That's less than minimum wage...jeesh. I don't think people realize servers make their money off tips. In fact...if your customers throughout the night dont tip enough, you end up having to pay the company, as the tip share is a percentage of total sales, rather than the tips you made. Being a waiter isn't what I thought it would be...

Either work harder for higher tips or don't work at all.

People know that waiters live off tips, unless you work at Denny's or something.

It's not a matter of working harder. Everything was perfect tonight, all the customers I had were pleased and were quite friendly. Some people just don't leave tips...it's not uncommon for someone to pay with their credit card and leave no tip at all.

I've had days like that. Didn't do too bad tonight, even though it's a Thursday. And guess what, my highest tip tonight was from a black couple. ;)

What type of place is it?

BTW, prepared to be torn apart by the ATOT cheapskates who will tell you that tipping is only done in situations with extremely good service. They will then defend themselves not as cheapskates, but as people wishing to instill a strong work ethic on others. After that, Aimster will key their brand new BMW x5 sitting in the driveway. He will then hop in his Ferrari 360 CS and drive back to Papa Johns to pick up some more pizzas.

Blacks?

No seriously if it works out to less than min wage for the week your employer is required to make it up. That is provided you are reporting and claiming your tips. I'm assuming this was just a bad night though.

which is stupid if ya ask me... they are employed by the restaurant but I have to worry about their wages? why aren't their employers made to pay them market wages?

Please see the other tipping thread for that argument.

And so it begins. The cheapskates feign a lack of understanding of 'the system.'

Either way you cut it you are going to pay for my wages. Either you tip or food prices go up everywhere, but I am getting payed. Bottom line is, whether you think it is stupid or not, tips are how I make ends meat. You may not agree with the system, but until it changes have a little courtesy and tip.

If restaurants didn't have tips, then food costs would go up dramatically. Probably 25% or so. This would cause a problem for restaurants, because then people will look at fast food places and say, hey, we can eat here WAY cheaper. By allowing a variable tip, this gives the cheapskates (who would choose fastfood) a way to go to the restaurant for less money, they just stiff the waiter. And the restaurant itself doesn't care, because it got that customer, who otherwise would have gone to a fast food place.

I disagree, I am a self proclaimed cheap ass, but I always tip. :)

I agree, here you only tip to round of the figure or if the service is really good, alltough the hourly wages are a lot better...

When i was in the US however i was really generous with my tips (expense account :D )

Nebor is correct. Also when you purchase your food you are paying for just that. Your food. You get to base what you pay for service on the quality of service you receive. Great system if you ask me.

Also the wait staff is basically being "allowed" to work there for tips. If you want to blame someone here ya go.

Unfortunately the argument around here against tipping seems to be that waiters make huge amounts of money and as unskilled workers they don't deserve it. Guess you proved them wrong.

I think the restaurants get off easy in the whole deal. While the quality of my food is the #1 reason why I would go back to a restaurant, if the service is lousy then no matter how good the food is I'll go somewhere else. If there is a great server then the restaurant will benefit by increased traffic and hopefully the server who get increaed tips. However, if the newly loyal customer is not a tipper then restaurant gets more $, customer gets good food and good service, server gets d!ck.

I haven't tipped in weeks. Haven't gone anywhere either. Last tip was ~$40 on a ~$73 tab...

That customer won't continue to get good service. And I doubt his food will remain as good. People who are regulars at restaurants AND sh!tty tippers are just... clueless.

i always tip decent ( average ). Sometimes when money flow is good and service is good I will leave a really nice tip. I figure it this way. If I can't afford to tip my server then I don't need to eat out. I either need to goto mickey d's or stay at home.

Well, being in a service industry I have to say that even if I were to recognize a customer as one that does not tip consistently, I doubt my level of service would drop. I don't really "work" to give people good service, it's just part of my nature. It would require more effort on my part to be a dick than to just take care of them like normal. Hell, I might even be inclined to go the extra mile in order to coax them into leaving me something.

A few restaurants these days allow the waiters the right to refuse service to a guest who has been there before and has been rude, no tip, whatever. If the customer has gone through every waiter present at the time, then either the manager waits on them, or the manager asks them to leave.
