Before I pull the trigger on another iPod

So I've had my 15 gig 3rd Gen for about a year and a half now and I love the thing to death. However... the headphone jack has now gone tits up on me :( So, before I get a new one is there anything else I should be considering? The iPod is the standard as far as I'm concerned so I'm looking for something that can beat it or come reasonably close in the areas of size, ease of navigation, durablity, and battery life.

I nead at least:
20 gigs of space
12 hours (more would be good) of battery life
a nice intuitive easy to navigate menu
something that's very durable as I've used the crap out of my iPod every day.
something that's within an ounce or so of a 20 gig iPod (5.6 ounces)
Oh, and something that looks decent.

Is there anything else out there for me?

I like the iriver, however compared to the iPod, the h320's iterface felt very clunky, and not as intuitive.

Get the Archos Gmini 400. 20 gb, about the same size/price as an ipod plus it play video files.

It's been discontinued though. To me the H320/340 feel flimsy. I have an H120 and love it. If you could find one, get it.

Open up your iPod and see if there's something wrong with the wiring or seating of your headphone jack. If you love the thing to death, and you're out of warranty, you have nothing to lose by opening it and attempting to fix the problem yourself. When my Archos Gmini 220 suddenly stopped turning on one day I opened it and saw that one of the wires to the battery had been disconnected by corrosion. So I just soldered the wire back together. If in the end you do decide to get rid of it, take out the hard drive and sell it.

the creative zen touch is good (i have one). it's a bit bulkier than the ipod, less stylish, navigation is not as good. but it's $75 cheaper, 12 hours more battery life, and connects to the computer easily. i would still choose my zen touch because it's also less fragile than the iPod and the battery life is awesome.

I've already popped it open. Trust me. The problem with the jack is that it's just worn out from being used daily. Doesn't make very good contact anymore which causes the sound to cut in and out like a mother.

I'm just planning on getting a new mp3 player and then just selling this one cheap to someone who wants it for parts or wants to deal with repairing it. I'd repair it myself if any third party companies sold heaphone jacks like they do batteries but alas, they do not. Funny thing, I always thought the battery would go first on this thing but it's as good as new, as is the rest of the iPod. *shrugs*

If the new ones last as long as your 3rd gen wouldn't touch another one with a 10ft pole.

*shrugs* To each his own. I got this thing back in May of 2003 and it's seen pretty much 6-8 hours a day of daily use since then and the only thing wrong with it is the headphone jack. Go put 2300 hours of use (very very conservative estimate) on any other electronic device you own and see how good it holds up. Besides, would I trade the last year and a half that I've had with it for the $380 I spent on it? Not a chance.

So you want 12+ hours of battery life, and you're going to get an ipod? That makes a lot of sense... Are you female?
