Let me ask a few questions as i've been thinking about buying one of these.

Is the Zen Touch easy enough to hook up to your car?

Does it feel considerably heavier than the IPOD?

Is the lack of firewire a big deal or is USB 2.0 fast enough?

What is the deal with these Creative Zen Xtra's that are in the same price range as the Zen Touch but have bigger HDD's?

More questions as I think of them...thanks in advanced!

Perhaps the biggest performance claim by Apple is the improved battery life of up to 12 hours. That's 50 percent--or 4 hours--longer than the previous iPod's. CNET Labs was able to hit nearly 14 hours in its standardized drain procedure

Jackass.

Creative Zen Touch...hands down. Battery life is rated at 24 hours, and though it's a TINY bit thicker than an iPod, I'd take 12 additional hours of battery life over 0.1" thinner any day of the week. In fact, I just pulled the trigger on one at Amazon myself. $235.99 minus a $25 GC I had made for a great deal.

Oh, don't mind Gurck-his mommy wouldn't buy him an iPod so he has had his panties in a bunch for a while..

Get an iRiver.
One simple reason.
The line out doubles as a second headphone socket (including volume control), so you can either have 2 sets of headphones plugged in, or, if one socket gets worn out, you can just use the other one :)

Nevermind Gurck, he expects your portable to sound like your HT setup...though I do agree that the Ipod is not the best choice.

I must agree, I have the iRiver as well but the navigation system is just not as good as the iPod

Then your recomendation would be? After reading the reviews I'm more stuck than ever. I either get:

An iPod - mediocre battery, incredible design, incredible navigation, short on features
An iRiver H320 : Great battery life, great features, crappy (from reviews) navigation, decent to good design, and garbage support
A Zen Touch : Great battery life, decent on features, crappy design (imo), and decent navigation

What a freaking compromise game this is.

I got a Zen Xtra 30 GB for $200 instead of an iPod 20 GB for $300 -- it's a bit bigger, but sound quality is great, the amp is beefy enough to hear quiet songs over my lifecycle, and I could fit 100 more CDs while saving $100.

If you like to pay $1 a song for 128kbps music, then iTunes is probably better than the services selling the WMA instead of AAC (since the Nomad won't support protected AAC). I buy and rip CDs, to lossless FLAC for my jukebox PC and to 192kbps vbr mp3 for my Zen so this doesn't affect me.

I normally just listen to whole CDs instead of messing with shuffling or playlists, so the iPod could be better enough at them to justify paying 50% more for 33% less space. And iPods are "cooler" than others, so coolness might be worth an extra $100 if you think it will help.

I am as confused as ever. Living in Canada really sucks. The prices are so inflated, it's annoying. A simple Zen Micro would cost me (after taxes) 402.60$ CAD... :(

I don't know man, I would say that an iPod has some serious advantages to it. I have absoluately fallen in love with the Smart Playlist feature of iTunes, and the easy navigation of the iPod is fantastic, and plus its price is not high compared with its competition, especially if you are a student and can get the education discount ($269 for a 4G 20Gb is fantastic).

And don't listen to people who complain about the iPod sound quality... it does sound different, but thats because it plays all your songs without any equalizer amplification or adjustment by default. However, I still like the little tweaks in equalizer settings, and if you use MP3Gain to normalize your mp3 files and put the equalizer on a good setting like Rock or Acoustic the iPod sounds AWESOME.

I'd go with the iPod based on the design and user interface. The battery is not a big deal to me because I'd charge it at night, between classes, etc. I do like the built-in fm tuner feature the iriver has. That's really cool.

It is that way to an extent. I'd say the iPod was the best all-rounder, however.

Do you use itunes to manage your iPod? if so, then you're probably not going to like the alternatives if you're used to good design.

Don't worry about Gurck, he feels a need to personally insult anyone who owns an iPod for some reason. As you can see, everyone's pretty tired of him now.

Yes, most ipod proponents are :) It gets 10 at best in the real world, and that's playing 128bit music. But you knew that ;)

This from someone whose argument for the ipod is that it's good because he doesn't like my dog? That headphones' sound quality may be judged by whether or not they use neodymium magnets? That headphone amplifiers require car batteries?

I called you on knowing siht about sound quality while claiming that you knew what you were blabbering about, not on liking the ipod. Sorry you're too sore about it to see the difference kiddo, next time if you don't know something don't comment on it. Attitude & posturing like that are typical of ipod users and young children; the logical conclusion is that there is a lot of overlap between the two.

And  at PM's sig - Which one are you? :p

Um, ETA = Estimated Time of Arrival. Receipt of goods depends on the supplier. :p
