Beer - Will it stay good if it goes warm unopened?

We had alot of beer in our fridge, then we had a week long power outage. Will the beer still be good if we throw it back in the fridge again? I know things like pepsi/coke will not taste right, but what about beer?

Depends on the beer. I think Coors is the only one that goes bad when not kept cool.

...and pepsi and coke not tasting right? That stuff never gets refrigerated until it gets to your house.

Depends on a couple things.

1) How hot it actually gets. If it gets to like 90 degrees that could spell trouble.
2) How long it stays there. A few days, probably not a big deal. A few months at warm temps, probably not so good.
3) Keep it out of direct sun. Sunlight is a killer and will skunk it quickly.
4) Depends on the beer. Some are just more sensitive than others. I personally think that lighter beers (and lagers in particular) get skunky faster than ales.

I think beer that has been cold then gets HOT gets skunky tasting. Hard to say depending on how warm it got.

I also think soda reacts the same way IMHO. it's fine if it hasn't been chilled, but I think once it has, it gets funky.

I'd be willing to put a lot of money down on your inability to tell the difference between chilled then warmed then chilled soda versus warmed then chilled soda versus only chilled soda.

I'd be curious to see if there was a difference between how a diet soda and a non-diet reacted.

hey, it tastes different to me. IMO soda that has been chilled and then gotten hot (in the garage or whatever) takes on a more bitter and acidic taste.

and as you can tell, several people posted they think it happens with beer. why is it inconceivable that soda reacts similarly?

Warm or cold, diet goes down the drain. Non diet goes down my throat. 🙂

Most of the stores up here don't refridgerate beer at all, it's all just stacked on the floor to buy. Never had a problem before.

you (and others) are missing the point. we all know beer and soda are shipped and usually sold warm. the difference is this is beer that has gotten cold then warm. THAT is where the problem lies.

Almost all beer I have had this happen with changes the taste a little. Dubbed the "Cold, Warm, Cold Effect". Now if the beer was shipped from the factory warm to begin with and it was not initially cooled, you are good to go.

I have a general rule that once beer is refrigerated it should stay that way. It might be me, but it seems like every time I drink beer that went cold->warm->cold it tastes a bit flat.

Still has the alcholol in there though and it won't make you sick. So, I guess it matters on what you drink for.

Depends on the beer. A domestic won't matter. A good beer however will skunk.

this

for the most part, you want to maintain temperature. If it was on the shelf when you bought it, it would be fine. If cooled>warm>cooled, not so good.

this.
Because the yeast has been filtered out in a domestic beer.

The yeast reactivates in a craftbrew or a homebrew when it gets warm and that changes the flavor.

Will beer spoil (e.g., get an bacteria or mold infection?)? NO
Will the flavor change? Maybe.
What to do? Refrigerate for a few days and drink. Avoid exposure to high temps (90+)

Note: Skunk is caused by exposure to UV light (including sunlight) not heat. So this is only an issue for beers in bottles, espeically clear bottles. However, some brewers are able to produce beer that are more resistance to skunking than others. Put a bottle of High Life and Corona in a window for a few days, drink and compare! Skunky flavors will dissipate or disappear if the beer is returned to the dark for a few days.

Yeast won't reactivate unless there is a new source of food for them to consume. Most craft brews are filtered, though a few are not, and therefore do not have any yeast in the bottles. Yeast are actually good for you with full Vitamin B complex.... Though some yeast may give a person gas.
