This case is pretty good cooling, looks cool and is easy to install. I would be lovin' it if it were not so DAMN LOUD...

I read on some posts here that people thinking about getting this case were unsure of the noise level...so I will answer this: it is SO loud I can here it all the way down the hallway with the door closed.

A part of me wishes I bought the Sonata, but alas, it is too late to return, but all-in-all, the Tsunami is a pretty good case...

Actually, to be honest, the noise on this thing has been driving me insane, so I have been playing around with it, unplugging certain fans on it to find out which fan is the culprit of making the most noise.

Oddly enough, the 120 mm fans seem to be making more noise than the 92 mm fan, or even the 80 mm fan I have. I know in theory 120 mm fans are supposed to be quieter than all other fans, but it sure doesn't seem that way.

Maybe because I had the 120 mm fans running at full load, is why they are so loud. I will be getting an CM Aerocool III later this week, which hopefully will solve the problem to some degree. Meanwhile I have unplugged both 120 mm fans...so the noise is bearable now with only the 92 mm fan running. I guess system temp will have to suffer for the next couple of days.

BTW, I am somewhat of a newbie compared to some of you when it comes to cooling...so if you guys have any suggestions on how to reduce the noise, please let me in on some of your wisdom =)

First, make sure your cabling and wiring runs are clean, shoot for total unobstruction of the airpath through the case. Second, get the best CPU HSF and thermal compound you can afford, not only will a good sink dissipate heat at a higher rate, but will allow you to run its' attached cooling fan slower, and thus, quieter. Last, try to place all of your fans on a fan controller, whether it be hardware or software based to get your rpm's down. You have to experiment a bit to find a trade-off between noise and cooling. Check the specs for cfm and dB on each fan. You may find it to your advantage to replace the stock fans based on your desired result. PSU's can be noisy too, depending on how hot they run. Cheaper quality PSU's generally have small heatsinks inside, so their fans run harder to compensate for the small surface area, which equates to increased noise. Don't mess around with modding a PSU, just buy a good quality one to start with. You will greatly improve your noise situation and have great cooling to boot.

I'll give you an example of my cooling situation:

I have a Super Lanboy case with the stock 120mm front fan and Thermaltake 120mm rear fan connected to the fan only connectors on my Antec 550 True Control PSU which houses a 92mm intake fan and an 80mm exhaust fan. The True control PSU comes with a fan/voltage pots controller that fits in one of the 5.25 bays and all 4 of the fans I mentiond above are controlled by this controller through the PSU. In my case, I have the fan knob set to zero, minimum fan speeds, minimum noise. The nice thing is, if the system warms up too high, the controller will automatically increase the speed of all fans. I have run the machine hard and have never seen an increase in fan speeds, a very good sign of good cooling.

Another fan is the CPU fan, which I control manually with a fanmate2 from Zalman. It controls a 92mm Zalman fan which sits atop a Swiftech MCX478 sink and is set to 2000rpm, the point where it is not noticeable to my ears. It cools my P4 3.2 GHz CPU exceptionally well when idle, about 30C, and about 46C under load.

There is also a Northbridge HSF on my Abit IC7 which I control with a freeware program called Speedfan. I reduced the speed from 6000rpm (which is stock) to 3500rpm. Again, to my ears, the noise is not heard.

Last, I have a retail ATI X800Pro with stock cooling, nice to see ATI using copper sinks. The fan is controlled thermally and is very quiet compared to the stock 9800Pro it replaced.

That is all of my fans and I'll have to say I am very pleased with the noise level I was able to achieve. Hope this gives you a some ideas.......

Is there a reason you're blindly trolling?

Perhaps it never entered your mind to consider this:

I built this rig with two things in mind:

1) Dual core processors are coming out later this year, and they will be socket 939. Buying a high end single core now is a bad purchasing decision.

2) R520 and NV50 (or whatever Nvidia's competitor core will be) are right around the corner, buying a high end GPU right now is a bad purchasing decision.

However, the SLI board was probably the best buy this year. It opens my planned upgrade path to a dual core processor and SLI NV50 (Ultra, or whatever equivalent) perfectly.

Apparently you've never heard of long term planning.

If you want to get into a big dick contest, I can give the address, you can come on over, and we can pull them out and get a ruler. I plan to keep this GPU and CPU for 8 - 12 months, tops, which is why I chose not to spend a lot of money on them.

And Thermaltake is still mediocre at best.

The interesting part about this is with my decision to go with a Winchester core, I may have the road open all the way to 2.6Ghz, which is roughly equivalent to a 4200+. I may not need to go dual core for a couple of years. I could just upgrade the GPU.

You, on the other hand, appear to have handicapped yourself there with a Newcastle core - if you want more performance, you're going to have to pay for it. Your system is also AGP based, so your boned there as well. You're also on socket 754, so you really have no future except Semprons.

Bottom line is this: I built a base for the future, with a holdover processor and GPU until this motherboard can be properly utilized. Yes, moving up to newer technology costs more. Oh well. It costs twice as much to build a system with old tech, and then build a complete new one a year down the line, which is what you're going to have to do.

I would advise that you don't blindly flame if you don't know the intentions of the person(s) involved. I chose my components with great care after doing a large amount of research.

Should do you fine. CM cases tend to be very quiet for their price bracket.

Also, you need not run 120mm at full blow unless they're low CFM - their increased size allows them to pull more air at lower RPM. 80s and 92s will scream at you though.

A fan controller might help you rein in those fans, if they're still too loud for you. Vantec makes some excellent models.

I started replacing the fans in my Tsunami with quieter ones. The front fan is the noisiest because of its proximity so if you replace just one, do that one, next would be the side 92mm fan. After trying several different brands, I put in 14db 120mm and 92mm SilenX fans. They are expensive, but had the best real-word noise vs. cooling performance that I found. They also have LED versions if you have the window Tsunami version.

could you not use a fan controller to turn down the noise?

since when did buying jaton make you more knowledgable? how do you even know you paid less? for all you know, he got the whole setup for christmas.

you need to THINK before you POST.

AH yes now i know who you are. you're edward lee. i knew i recognized that stupid sig from somewhere. why'd you change names mate?

Oh, and for the OP, i love my Tsunami, though after a few weeks i will agree that it is a BIT loud, though nothing annoying or untolerable. But if u want it to be quieter u could try replacing the front (or back if u want, but the back seems to be better for some reason IMO) and getting some Panaflo's and a fan speed controller.

However, just make sure that the knobs on the controller dont interfere with the closing door!!!

Its fairly loud but its not unbearably so.

I like mine a lot. I am going to change the fans to make them quieter, but thats just because i'm wanting to make a silent pc.

Cancel order + buy a Centurion 5 = profit.

psh, FANBOY

I think it's fairly obvious that that post was made with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Despite that:

The point was, if you're worried about the case, cancel the order and buy something else. I can vouch that the Centurion 5 has made me quite happy and is reasonably priced, but depending on how much you're willing to spend, there's a variety of cases from a variety of manufacturers that are great quality. In the under $100 range, look at CoolerMaster and Antec. If you're willing to go up to $150 - $200, there are a lot of great options by Lian-Li and Silverstone.

Give them a look. The last thing you want to do is buy something you'll be dissatisfied with.

well i've been looking at the tsunami for about 4 months now (i even went to a store and LOOKED at it, but they wouldnt let me test the fans)

im just sick to my stomach because through AT forums, people say that my case, psu, mobo, and hdd selections have been bad . . .
