Bedridden....again.

So Ive been making a remarkable recovery from the surgeries I had late last year to get rid of UC. Ive been either walking 5 miles a day or biking for two to three hours. I was back up to 30 pushups a day and otherwise enjoying good health after suffering for the last 13 years.

The more I rode my bike the more confident I became, taking on more and more scary hills of asphalt or grass. Yesterday I was going full speed down a steep bumpy grass hill on my way back from riding through a forrested trail along the river. Ive taken this hill before so I was confident I could handle it. At the bottom of the hill you have to slow down and veer sharply to the right or youll be headed back up the the mini slope leading back to the widing road on the other side.

Instead of slowing down I thought I had enough momentum to go up the equally steep slope on the other side. When I was going up it, the grass and bumpy ground acted like a brake and slowed me so fast that I lost my momentum and tried to recover by steering right back down the slope. It didnt work.

After the right turn the bike came to a stop sideways on the steep slope. I now had nothing to rest my right foot on. I tried in vain anyway sticking my leg out to stop the fall. My leg twisted around and gave way. I then quickly stuck my right arm out to break the fall, that didnt work either and my own body weight, downward momentum and bike made my arm give way as well.

At the very end the handlebars slammed into my kneecap and I kept sliding down the hill now separted from the bike. I came to stop and my leg was killing me. It looked all screwed up and hurt like hell. All of this was happenning real fast and I was alone in between these two hills where no one could see me. I quickly thought that my leg was out of socket and tried I to straigten it out real fast. Nope. I realized now I couldnt move at all.

Thankfully I had my phone, called my dad and he headed over. In the meantime a couple of passers by helped me from the gulley to the curb. Luckily there was two of them so they could carry my torso.

Anyway, I arrived in the emergency room at 3pm yesterday and left at 1am today. I had several xrays and a CT scan (it was agony getting all that done). I have a sprained right arm and a broken tibea plateau. Some small bone is also dislocated and will require surgery (a plate and screws).

The next two weeks will be fun filled days of bed rest, followed by agonizing trips to the bathrom, a velcro leg immobilizer that I swear is reducing my circulation and leg that spasms frequently. And since my right arm is also out of whack for the time being, Im pretty much screwed (thankfully the swelling is comming down and the vicoden helps).

Overconfidence is sometimes rather painful. 😳

Dang. That sucks. Get plenty of rest and don't push it.

The pain killers WILL constipate you. Head that off before it becomes a problem.

UC = ulcerative colitis. It's like mini-crohn's (rough approximation)

Get better OP, at least you're alive and have your wits about you

Were you wearing your brain cap?

Real men dont wear helmets. :sneaky:

I learned when I was very young to always raise your head in a fall. Sometimes however the force of the impact prevents this so it doesnt always work. I got lucky considering the tumble I took.

You want to know the best part? I was creating a YouTube video of my exploits for my relatives and had done the most dangerous filming last week. This week I wanted to capture the "jungle cave" I found hidden away that was pretty cool.

I wasnt filiming at the time of the accident but had taken fast hills with one hand on the brake and the other on the camera. I guess it was just a matter of time. :'(

I was joking with my parents that if they didnt hear from me again, Ive probably been ran over (Ive had too many close calls from idiot drivers to count). So if I never post again, thats probably what happened.

Hmm... not wearing a helmet? you. are. fucking. retarded.

That sucks man, hope you have a full recovery and get back out there soon.

Thanks. I just hope surgery turns out well. Ive been reading about all the things that can happen with a tibial plateu fracture. Just have to pray the that the surgery goes well and I dont develop too many complications.

Also, arthritic knee later on in life. D:

Take a hint, next time.

2 serious spills. Both times I would have been carried in the ambulance but for my helmet. 1 of them, the helmet split nearly in 2.

Edit:Arthritic knee: fish oil, ftw.

Is the bike ok?

Yeah. It was one of those cheap $150 Walmart bikes with shocks in the front and one in the middle. I had worn the hell out of it recently, having to drill a hole in the handlebars and place a bolt because the threads where gone. The gears are always screwy and the brakes stop the bike well but dont last long enough. I maintain it well since its only about two years old (my last one lasted since 1997), but its kind of creeky now considering all the abusive riding I do. Heck just the other day I was going up a hill, changed gears and bent a couple of links in the chain after it came off track.

Damn bike. 😡

Glad the helmet saved your life. I would also thank God that it did its job.

It may be 3 to 6 months before I can ride again. I will now consider all safety precautions considering Ive discovered Im not indesctrutable after all. 😱

I also had an accident that destroyed the helmet I was wearing. That could have been my skull.

Anyway, OP, I'm assuming that since you could post this thread that I'll be seeing you in UMAG. (Working my way to level 50.)

Hope you feel better soon Kat. It sucks getting old, eh? I'd probably kill myself doing the shit I did when I was younger :^/
