06 Mazda 6 GT Sports Hatch with 20k asking 19k (so under 22k out the door) and it's a Mazda certified preowned.

this is an 07 Mazda 6 I4 with 38k mileage asking 14k (under 16k out the door)

Beats all the other choices you mentioned.

Seriously, look at the used cars, they are great value. I just went through this process. I started looking at new Camry, Accord, Altima, Mazda6, Legacy and ended up importing a 06 MB E350 4Matic for less than what any of those new cars cost, which were around 40-43k.

I know you said you're off domestics now, but people do rave about the Focus. It may be worth looking at and I bet you could get a killer deal on one right now. Ford is also the strongest of the Big3 from a potential bankruptcy perspective.

Of course, this is true. Used is simply a big win/win. When we got our Mazda MPV it had 15k miles on it and was the same price as a barebones brand new Mazda 3. With 100k powertrain factory warranty it was a no-brainer. Used cars are just the best thing to do.

I would get the AWD Matrix if I lived in Canada, but the Civic and Corolla are both good choices, I think it's just a preference on companies. I don't know if the Civic has a timing belt or chain, but the Corolla has a chain, I prefer it.

AWD is not something you just develop overnight. I doubt Toyota managed to just steal Subaru's AWD (They tried to takeover Subaru but got barred by the Japanese government) so I am weary of the Honda and Toyota AWD.

I'd either go Civic if I wanted something a bit "nice" or just hit up the Matrix/Vibe for the most function/reliability/value.

My wife's civic just never stops. I'd love for it to be unreliable so that I'd have an excuse to buy her a new car....but this thing just hammers along and cost almost nothing to maintain. I love it from a money standpoint...it's just so boring to drive (last generation...not current model).

Because they never made the Rav4 right?

Toyota's Landcruiser has been around since since WWII. It's the favored vehicle of insurgents and terrorists worldwide.

I'm confused by the pole results.

The Matrix has 15 votes, and the Vibe has 5 votes. Don't people realize they are the same car?

Sure, on the Land Cruiser, where there is plenty of room to stick a beefy AWD system. The Rav4 & Matrix AWD however do not belong in the same class.

That would be a really bad example to use as your supporting argument. Try Land Cruiser, that at least is a decent system.

You don't need AWD in Canada just a good set of winter tires and rims
Michelin X-ice 2's

AWD helps some in the winter for starting traction, acceleration and maintaining grip with the vario power distribution, other than that it's all tires/brakes.

AWD drive is more expensive initially, mechanically complex to repair, and always increases fuel consumption. It increase GVW which increases braking distance.

Unless you live in the mountains or drive backroads its cons outweigh the pros

As of December of 2008, the NUMMI plant produces the Toyota Corolla compact car, Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, the Toyota Matrix hatchback, and the Pontiac Vibe hatchback.

Also, don't be hating on America.

Also, can someone please explain to me the point of those tiny side back windows on the Matrix? You can't see sh!t out of them.

Got owned by the calendar. Did not know about the switch. Wonder what Cambridge is doing now other than the Lexus RX and Toyota Corolla.

And I would not buy a Matrix nor a Vibe so it doesn't really matter to me.

you don't enjoy driving awd?

I've had 2 vehicles, but I find on pavement, the cons outweigh the pros
Doesn't mean they don't have their place , but this guy is looking for A cheap and B reliable/maintenance free

with the way the exchange rate is now, it may be cheaper to just buy in the US and pay the import taxes. i like the new corolla though, very nice

They are built in the same factory, so am I missing something?

Edit: sorry, missed the latest responses.
