A coworker of mine is friends with one of Phelps' good friends. Apparently he doesn't even want to stay for the closing ceremony.

I don't care if anyone sings, anyway.

Hey - the guy spent the last 15 years of his life practicing swimming for the olympics. He just won GOLD and you expect him to be quiet during the national anthem? He probably was not even aware it was playing. If you have never been in his position, you have no right to criticize.

This is always the case with any sort of celebrity.

Dark Helmet: Before you die, there is something you should know about us, Lone Starr.
Lone Starr: What?
Dark Helmet: I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate. [1]
Lone Starr: What's that make us?
Dark Helmet: Absolutely nothing-?which is what you are about to become.

Megan Walsh probably also thinks that he should have held back and let the other athletes win a few medals for a change because it's not fair.

Patriotism is not measured by how many times you sing the national anthem.

I like how the expectation that our greatest olympian has to speak like a professor and sing the national anthem to be considered patriotic. All the guy has done most of his life is swim. He's been gracious in victory and that's all I care about.

There are plenty of athletes who sing the anthem when it's played before sporting events, but that doesn't mean the ones who don't sing aren't patriotic.

Who gives a damn whether he sings or not, he's happy to be representing America.

so? i don't see how singing it or not is a sign of patriotism. My Grandfather faught WWII and was very proud of his nation. He would ALWAYS stand (even when he could bearly walk) and cover his heart. but i don't ever remember hearing him sing.

And i have yet to meet anyone who loved this nation more then him.
