BCAA - Branch-chain Amino Acids - good or bad for you?

My 'Reign' energy drinks have these claimed on the label. Are these good or bad for you? The reason that I ask, is that my kidneys were hurting today, and I had issues with my "flow".

Could these be the culprit, or energy drinks in general, or do I have an infection, or is my spine and guts all twisted-about, like a mashed pillow, because my matress is caving in on one side, feels like I'm sleeping on a wedge or maybe a skateboard ramp.

There is also the matter of just how much are you drinking.


Sucralose can have subtle effects that are rare enough a scientific study will not "catch" it. It cause a "dullness" in the head for me personally. Thus, I do not drink Powerade anymore.
Acesulfame potassium leaves a "bitter" feel a longer time after consumption for me.

Sodium benzoate could react with ascorbic acid to form a little benzene, although it is not in the drink.

I doubt the amino acids will do anything noticeable. Anything in excess will be converted to carbohydrate or fat if they are not used.

You could eat so much you overload the liver and kidneys, but it's your blood that will have too much of whatever cannot be converted, and you have to eat a lot of protein.

They are an essential part of your diet. Won’t hurt you but excess in the form of supplements is unlikely to be of any use to your body unless you’re exercising.

From what I’ve seen you post here you should re-evaluate pretty much your entire diet though man and skip the energy drinks and soda altogether. Black coffee will do the job if you need the caffeine.

As the others have said, BCAAs are just components of protein. Some people believe that supplementing BCAAs helps with muscle recovery but if you're eating adequate protein sources you're in good shape.

From what I know of you, you do not exercise and probably have no need to supplement BCAAs however they probably aren't killing your kidneys. How many reign drinks are you having daily on top of other non-water drinks?

Jesus christ. Yes, you probably are liquifying your internals. Try to taper down from that. Water them down if you have to extend them.

How do you afford that many on a daily basis? Aren't you basically on zero income?

IMO, the claims that those energy drinks make (Bang, Reign) are just marketing ploys and the doses are non significant. Bang claims to have COQ10, but lets be honest. How much could they put into their cans and still be profitable? None of it is written on the can and its done on purpose. Its all given in one lump sum. BCAAs, COQ10, Super Micronized Creatine, and Beta Alanine. They are there but in very small doses. In regard to injesting BCAAs on their own I still think they are a waste of money. BCAAs are expensive, and you can get BCAAs in protein powder and whole foods. Don't waste your money. If you want something like creatine, beta alanine or creatine just buy the supplement instead. You'll get the correct dose, and it will be more than enough. And, much cheaper. At least the beta alanine and creatine. COQ10 is quite expensive.

In regard to caffeine content, this guy here had two lab test done on Bang and the results were shocking. Bang was shown to have way less caffeine than the 300mg that the company states.

Not sure if I trust that article on its face, but I suspect that there is relatively poor quality control in many of these "health supplement drinks" and that the content of supplements can vary wildly from batch to batch. The lack of any real FDA regulation really hurts the entire industry.

Good points. If I had a can of candy apple and cotten candy bang how much would the caffeine differ? I've since stopped consuming them anyway. They are just too expensive and not good to use daily. I was getting anxiety, and it was becoming a very bad habit. I've since switched to green tea for my caffeine. I do have a preworkout in powder form, and will do just 1/2 scoop before workout. The 1/2 scoop equals about 60mg of caffeine.
