It always nags at me a little (just a little) that they are not more careful using ideas, references, and even objects that would have had to evolve in an exact parallel as it did on Earth to end up being exactly the same as we do things here. Not just casual things like a helmet or a pistol shooting bullets but there are some points where I would have though the writers would change it up at least a little bit. One example that immediately comes to mind is that their idea of government is exactly the same as ours. They have a congress, vice president, and they even call their leader the President. They have lawyers, trials, even "Freedom of the Press". Their military command structure is exactly the same, they have the same separation of Military and Civilian leadership, and so on. How did they manage to evolve all of these ideas to reach the exact same conclusion as we did? If you watched the show and they never mentioned where they came from or where they were going you'd never even question that they might not be from Earth.

It seems a bit lazy on the part of the writers, but on the other hand, I guess it lets them get on with the plot and not have to explain a bunch of mundane details.

They came from earth... Earth may be the 13th colony, but in all arelaity, it probably was just forgotten. Most likely, the first 12 colonies probably took a millenia to settle caprica, as they might not have had FTL drives.

Explosivly propelled projectiles for personal weaponry is still probably more effective than laser weapons.

And just because they don't launch into a 20-minute technobabble monologue (I'm looking at you star trek) every time they fire the guns, doesn't mean they couldn't be rail guns.

The names of the roles of government are just typical TV fluff to allow the audience to easily grasp who's who on the show, but things like a separation of power between the military and civilian government is something that's occurred separately all over the world for centuries. If all those far-flung civilizations came to the same conclusion, so can humanity in a different universe.

You're missing the point. I love science fiction. But good science fiction is congruent with almost every aspect of the setting. In star wars, they have ships that travel at light speeds, their vehicals on ground hover, everything is congruent. Here it's a jumbled mess. I like the show, don't get me wrong, this is just a rant.

Yet in Starwars, they still fight very closely in space. I figured w/ that kind of technology, they'd have FTL missiles and battles will take place across an entire system (kind of like how the space battles are in Hyperion series where the enemies don't really see each other since their firepower reaches multiple parsecs; like how human military tech has always strived for long-range accurate firepower, Starwars space battles never made sense to me).

Obviously, that'd make it cinematically boring.

That allows them to do some pretty interesting commentary IMHO, such as when the rebellion started using suicide bombers...

Most stuff is cooked in ovens, which either have metal coils that are heated via an electric current or via gas that is pumped in from an external source. Battlestar Galactica is one of the most believable sci-fi shows.

If you were to ever think about it, most sci-fi is retarded. In most sci-fi shows they use energy weapons that fire at a lower velocity, have a slower rate of fire, are less lethal, and seem to be less accurate than current firearms. They seem to be just a pretty light show. A machine gun would own most supposedly high tech "blasters."

We've been using firearms for over a thousand years, you think that will change in the near future? Galactica's tech isn't suppose to be too much higher than what we have now.

That's one of the reasons I liked Stragate SG1/Atlantis. Despite "less" advanced tech, the P90 still pwns!
