Because pistols with hard bullets are easy to produce, easy to maintain, easy to load with ammunition, easy to use... and get the job done. Phaser-type weapons simply add an unncessary level of complication to all of the above.

Gas-based vehicles did throw me for a loop, but whatever. They're only seen in 1-2 episodes, so you can gloss over it.

The corner cutting on the paper used in bsg drives me nuts. I understand it's an inside joke of some sorts but it's so unbelievable that it's annoying.

Many things in the show are intended to be "retro," partly as a nod to the original series in the 70s in which their effects and technology were really crappy, and partly because that's just what they want the show to look like.

You may as well ask why they rely so heavily on paper in the first place instead of PDA-like pads used on Star Trek. More so since they no longer have access to trees! Oops.

people do know that the humans in BSG aren't from earth, right?

Er, yes they are. The entire point of the show is that they are searching for Earth. They've simply lost their history. Did you notice that their primary religion is Greek Mythology?

Word of the Day time :)

Battlestar Galactica depicts a dysoptian future, and its anachronisms and discordant concepts make it all the more engaging when compared to traditional squeaky-clean sci-fis where everyone is a hero or a supergenius.

i.e. Being imperfect makes it interesting. Sometimes they stretch too far. Oh well.

You can literally do pretty much anything with a sonic screwdriver...

I prefer a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster myself.

Agreed. The weapons they used always made sense to me. I don't think too much into it.

I think you're thinking to hard...but it seems, with the exception of the FTL drive, they do not have technology much better then our own. The FTL drive is basically a magic drive anyway, so just make up some arbitrary magic rules for it not being used for FTL missiles and shit like that.
