Battlefield 4 + Frostbite + Mantle presentation by Johan A.

Good thing Nvidia doesn't pay up for bundles, devs and publishers line up at their door in hopes of bundling their games with nvidia's cards hehe

Well, if true it starts to make sense now as to why nobody else(developer wise) talked about or showed anything related to Mantle.

Nah, that's just fairly standard procedure. Get a dedicated development partner to take your library for a test ride, beat out the rough edges, pick up on most of the early bugs, and generally make it ready for use. Then you release it to the general public.

Yup, and I have no doubt that the dollar figure shown includes the R&D cost of Dice working with them on it. You never expect developers to just dump time into something without having their time payed for.

Indeed. However, given that EA seem to be basing almost all of their next-gen games off this engine I anticipate that this will be money well spent.

I see the BioWare logo on one of those slides...since Dragon Age Inquisition and the next Mass Effect are being made with Frostbite 3, I'd wager that those games will have Mantle support, maybe not at launch but at some point.

Yeah,

Like said many times:

Oh well, atleast its not the gamers that pay the bill (sort of). If this put pressure on Nvidia to create similar system, not even mentioning making this a industry standard, meaning it does have some nice performance boosts, we should all thank AMD for the change.

I wonder how Microsoft feels about it 😛

So on Oct 4th we can see AMD cards using matle vs DX11 for BF4 beta, right? Wait, NM. Its coming later I think.

Don't fret. It's not going to catch on. Nobody else is going to use it. The performance gains will be minimal to nonexistent. It's going to cost AMD millions. They are going to have to bribe the devs to use it. I mean, why else would they want to go through all that extra work. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Almost sounds like I'm talking about PhysX, doesn't it. 😉 /sarc

Seriously though. I can understand people thinking that AMD might not deliver as promised here. While it looks like they've really turned themselves around with game development, we've been let down in the past with high expectations. Fair enough. Keep your money in your pocket until show and tell time. First we'll see if Hawaii performs as advertised, then we'll see if Mantle is the game changer it's reported as being. A couple of months isn't too long. Probably still be time to ask Santa for one if it's as good as is being anticipated.

AMD really seems to be listening and paying attention though. They said they were going to give the devs what they wanted with the consoles. We've seen nothing to state that they didn't do exactly that, and they got the contract. They are basically saying they are doing the same thing, and giving the devs what they want for PC (and other platforms) now. It all sounds very reasonable. With GCN being in the consoles and PC's they do have the leverage to pull this off.

Yeah,

It's going to be part of the game engine. It's a feature that makes them use that game engine over another. Sure they are going to have to help the developer incorporate it into their game engine. How's the dev supposed to do that on their own.

It's not just some lines of code AMD has lying around they pay you to put in your game.

Right, they need manpower to code with Mantle. That cost money, to work extra to do that work after DX is done, or simultaniously with more people.

Because obviously there wont be any chance of a dev skipping DX. Because of a thousand reasons

2 scenarios, what will happen:

#1. If Mantle give a measely 5% FPS boost over DX?

#2. If Mantle gives 20-30% boost?

If mantle only gives a 5% increase in performance, then I will be very surprised. Seems like a lot of show talk and focus for 5%. I personally feel we will be looking at a 20-30% boost, though Josh W. @ PCPER seems to think 12% is likely.

Well personally, I think they will get a lot of negative feedback for overhyping the benefits unless it is at least in the range of 20%. I know I would feel that way if it is only 10 to 15 percent.

But honestly, I have not idea how much benefit it will bring.

who said dev's will skip dx 2012 in 2013-16.
edit: can you give any firm updates to dx as it look's like dx is dead .
also a very anti nv source
