You want my opinion on a game I've never played?

No wonder fanboys, hype-merchants and vapor-vendors rule the earth. We're supposed to be forming our opinions before we even get a chance to use the products.

Well I think you're all being a little anal about this question. A lot is known about this game and should be enough to discuss it's worthiness with the caveat of "if the balance and network code don't hamper it."

The only thing known about it is what a few reviewers have said after playing beta versions. He's asking us if it's worth playing when none of us have played it. None of us are qualified to discuss it's worthiness.

OK, so since you have as much knowledge about it as us, if not more, "discuss its worthiness" and tell us "if it's worth getting." That would be fair since it's what you're expecting from others.

Seriously, can anyone here possibly post something about the game that will decide for you today and forever whether you should get it or not? Or in the end are you (like the rest of us) going to wait on more real information before making this decision?

There will be some gameplay changes it looks like that some people may not like. Read the back of a pre-order box to see what I'm talking about.

Uh, yes. If somebody told me it was turn-based I wouldn't get it. If somebody told me it would have fewer vehicles than BF1942, I wouldn't get it. I can go on.

Or in the end are you (like the rest of us) going to wait on more real information before making this decision?

"Real" information? Oh, you mean a reviewer to tell you to get it. Got it. You always wait for other people to give you the nod to buy a game?

Think about this. If most reviews came out and said were horrible, would you not still get it...knowing that it had deformable buildings and 64 players and 30 vehicles and was developed by DICE who also brought us the amazing BF1942? How many people bought Star Wars Battlefront?

This could have been a constructive thread were the features and DICE's reputation were discussed, but, now, thankfully, we have averted that crisis and have another "I'm more enlightened than you thread"......

If that's desirable, then why haven't you kicked it off? Go on, discuss "the features and DICE's reputation." Tell us about its "worthiness" and tell us "if it's worth getting." Don't whine that it's lacking and not constructive when it was your idea, yet you bring nothing to the table and yet expect everyone else to do it for you.

"Real" information? Oh, you mean a reviewer to tell you to get it.
No, a reviewer telling you to get it would be an opinion. Real information would be from various sources giving specific verifiable features that actually make it into the game, how it runs on certain hardware configurations, specific brands of CPUs and GPUs ... technical glitches with sound, loading, saving, multiplayer... equipment, vehicles, maps, playstyle options... all this and more. If I personally were looking for a reviewer to decide for me, I'd have said so.

Okay.

So, I JUST got the latest edition of PC Gamer and inside is a "scoop" on Battlefield 2. I'm going to poaraphrase because I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be right to quote any of the article at this time.

- The reviewers played through the Gulf Of Oman map and were impressed by the squad mechanics, very detailed maps, and thought the aresenals were well balanced.

- You can join a Fireteam of up to six players.

- There is a commander class that will have a satellite view of the map to direct their side.

- During their test of the game their fireteam was given an assigned target that showed up on their HUD and a battle plan that showed up on everybody's screen.

- Birds fly from trees after explosions.

- Anti-tank missiles now follow your crosshair after you launch them, so, even though vehicles will still be a dominant role, they won't be the wrecking balls they could be in BF1942.

Here are some notable quotes from the features section of the BF2 official site.

Material penetration feature makes sure players know the difference between cover and concealment.

Character Persistence and Growth. With in-game success, players increase their rank from recruit all the way to General and unlock new weapons, medals, and more.

Full in-game community support including, buddy lists, stat tracking, live chat rooms, and in-game clan creation.

Battlefield 2 features immense, richly detailed, destructible environments, from city streets to remote forests,

I've also heard of ragdoll physics and dynamic lighting.

I haven't played a bad game from DICE yet.

There's no monthly fee and I'm sure I'll get more play time from this $35 game than I got from Doom 3 which got 8-9/10 by most reviewers even if the game isn't perfect.

Well, I am definitely getting it. My son and his friend play SW:Battlefront right now and I join them on the LAN sometimes too. I think they are (I am) gonna love this one.

I have one problem though. Minimum requirements seem to indicate that a GF4 isn't gonna run this game. That's what I have in my third machine (the guest's rig). It's an old 1.4ghz Tualatin Celery with a ti4200 and 512MB ram on an old Dell/Intel mobo. I dunno what to stick in there if the game won't run on the ti4200.

Should I drop $100 on a used 9800pro? Probably significant overkill for that CPU (which will never be upgraded). I'd rather drop $150 or less on a 6600 AGP and throw it in my 2nd machine (which has an AXP @ 2.25ghz). It has a 5900ultra right now that I could move to the 3rd box. Sure, it's still overkill (for both rigs), but at least the AthlonXP machine would see a boost over the 5900 and have what will probably be its last video card ever, and then the 3rd machine would at least run BF2.

Ugh. I dunno. Any other thoughts out there? Again, it's the 3rd machine, and doesn't get used much except by the neighbor kid, playing a lotta LAN stuff (WC3, UT2k4, SW:BF, etc). No AA/AF necessary and the old 17" CRT plays at 1024x768.

heres a video of BF2 gameplay:

alsofrom gamespot:
"The game looks beautiful, and the graphics engine delivers a world that's on par with that seen in Half-Life 2. But it's even more amazing since the levels are so much larger with so many players going around and doing different things. You are going to have so much fun with this game. We lost count of the number of times someone ran over an infantryman or how the rag-doll physics made bodies flop to the ground in fun ways. We saw a helicopter flying just a few feet above a tank that was rolling down the highway, kicking up the dust. It was just so cinematic to look up and see the silhouette of the chopper dominating the sky. We could go on, but you get the point. This game is going to be awesome, and EA will ship it this summer. Just hurry up with it, EA."

A demo of BF2 is coming out soon and according to EBGames Minimum Requirements you neeed at least a Geforce 3 or compatible (note these are subject to change)
