Not quite.. The other day My RAM usage exceeded 1.6GB after a game. It typically only goes to 1.4 for me but it apperently can go highier.

BTW I am running 1920x1200 everything on high 0x AA. Sound at medium quality. I also turn every other program off as I possibly can.

Wow, and I was thinking if I added 1.5 GB I would be OK, but now I'm probably gonna have to go with 2 GB.

What do you guys think, I'm running 6800 go in my laptop, and 1gb of ram. Problem is my screen is 1920x1200 and looks like a*s at any other resolution. You think 2gb will bring it up to playable? I have 256mb's of graphics memeory, and the lappy has 2 512mb so-dimms of DDR2.

Using a hardware sound card seems to dramatically reduce memory usage, that is likely why some dont see the stuttering, or as much of it / as severe with 1GB.

Setting up hardware sound on a PC that doesnt have it though (IE any integrated sound card) devastates performance.

And again, the memory usage numbers i posted are at absolute maximum settings. Nothing at medium. Nothing at low. Nothing off. Sound quality set to high.

You cant run that resolution on that graphics card in BF2. Youll have to gut the settings, in which case itll put you under 1GB anyway. So in your case, no, it wont help you.

Sorry to get in so late on your thread, but I just got BF2 and it lags like mad on my 2.5 ghz Winny/1 GB/6800GT...so I lowered the textures and a few others to medium and it cleared up the stuttering...but then I got confused...aren't textures supposed to be loaded into the GPU's RAM? I'm just confused on why textures, a video option, is taking up system RAM and not GPU.

Because textures swap in and out of memory throughout the entire game. There are far too many textures (500MB+) to store in the videocards local memory.

My bad, I thought there was compression to deal with that. Still doesn't explain why the scoreboard and the menu take time to load. 😛 j/k

You certinaly can run 1920x1200 with BF2... I do it every day.

You and me both...🙂

I think he is saying that you cant run that res with a 6800 go laptop.

For the record, I did pick up a few frames by dusting off and installing the old Audigy1 (with the 50 or so driver updates and patches). But my best improvement still seems to be getting 2GB of ram. BTW - I went from 2x512 235DDR with tight timings to 1GBx2 186DDR and crap timings.... still WAYYYY better

Yeah you can, I get a solid 30fps at 1920 on a 6800go, but it s...st...studders alot. I want to know if another gig will clear that up. 30fps isn't the greatest by any means... but I could live with it minus the studdering.

1Gb + 6800GT and it runs pretty good (50-60+fps) at 1280x960 at most settings high.
The big tweaking options for me was to turn textures+lighting to medium. This reduces the textures+lightmap storage needed for the game so loading times and in-game stutters are reduced significantly.

A basic/noob question - how do you calculate the fps that you're getting in BF2 (or any other game for that matter) during gameplay?

With a lot of action on the screen, itll run like garbage even with 2gb unless you reduce the settings, which will put you under 1gb memory usage, hence negating the benefits of an upgrade.

All up to date intel users, and the vast majority of AMD users, operate in dual channel, and need matched pairs to run at optimal speeds. Hence 2x512 or 4x512 or 2x1024. I do however agree, the memory usage never does seem to exceed 1400MB (including windows overhead) so 1.5GB resuls should match 2GB results (if you have a single channel system).

Man, what a bummer. I currently have 4 x 256 MB in a P4 system so looks like I'm gonna need to get new 2 x 1 GB. To make things worse, DDR2 memory is mega expensive.

Well I did the upgrade from 2 x 512 to 4 x 512. My qualitative observations of framerate seem to suggest they were neither hurt nor helped too much by the upgrade. I do notice that there is less hitching in the game (moments where all activity stops, including frame rate counters), thereby making it smoother without actually increasing framerates.

One thing that is DEFINATELY improved is I now have the ability to Alt+Tab back to Windows instantaneously. Before, this process would take around 10-20 seconds. In addition the game quits virtually instantaneously. Before, it would take about 20 seconds to get back to a stable, usable desktop.

Hope this helps people.

Yep alt+tab (so i can reconnect to xfire every 10 min lol)

Well, I stuck with 1GB of single channel 3200 ram and could play BF2 reasonably well... but let me say this, I bought another gig and 2GB helped smooth the gameplay out a whole lot! Now I am not saying you go out and buy another gig or what have you, im just letting you know BF2 is so poorly put together that it requires more then 1gb to enjoy ENTIRELY!
