Update Punkbuster

I've reinstalled this game due to the 1.50 patch.. how do I update PB? I downloaded pbsetup and it seems to have updated whatever it needed to with BF2/PB.

Any ideas why I'm getting an error message about Punkbuster, as soon as I join a server? Something about PnkBstrA.exe ?

Are you running it as administrator?

Running what as admin? BF2?

I've managed to get into 1 server and play full games with no error message, but on another server (I think an official EA one) I still saw the same error message.

What version of Windows are you running? I'm guessing Vista or Win 7.
What exact error message are you getting?

Yup Vista Home Premium, 64-bit. This looks like the exact error message I see: http://media.photobucket.com/i...ntistshoes/pberror.jpg

While on the subject, I have 8GB RAM, and 9800GTX+ on a Q6600, and I'm getting stuttering in a rather large game (I think 50+ players). Is it my machine? My ping looks okay, under 100.

I'm going to let others that actually have Vista chime in for now, but one more piece of info: What kind of internet connection do you have? Ping is one thing, but perhaps you are having bandwidth issues? Your machine should be able to handle this game from 2005 with no problem.
Google for that error message and Vista and you will see lots of things to try. I'll try to look in to it further tomorrow.

Thanks. I'll also try a smaller game and see if the stuttering goes away. My connection is DSL, I think it's rated at 30Mbps down and I get fairly decent speeds when doing downloads/uploads. I know that may not mean much, but in CS:S and DOD:S gameplay seems okay. (actually, come to think of it, on a large CS:S game it isn't 100% smooth either... hmmmm)

edit: just played on a 20 v 20 CSS server and it was actually ok. Wonder if it's because of low C drive space on my 34GB Raptor.. I moved the swap file out of C (it was down to only 500MB free and now I have 8GB). may be BF2 will be better - will try again later.

Stuttering has been an issue that plagues some folks since the game came out. For some, disabling superfetch seemed to help. I used to have it, and the superfetch thing worked for me. I'm now using different hardware and don't have the issue to worry about.

To me, seems like you need to do the manual update of PB. YOu said you laready downloaded PB setup? Did you click on the "choose game" field, go to BF2, check for updates and apply?

If you did, I'm out of ideas.

Yeah, I added BF2 and checked for updates. No go...

Even when it first came out the studdering thing was easily fixed. I get absolutely zero problems running it now on Vista.

OK this may sound dumb, but where exactly would I find PnkBstrA.exe? (or PnkBstrB.exe) I should make sure I at least have this file installed on my computer somewhere... right?

Sorry for those who are having trouble with BF2 on their non-Windows XP Pro editions...

I've never committed to anything beyond WIN XP Pro 32-bit simply because of what everyone is posting and/or having issues with. Tried vista and had problems with BF2. Randomly crashed and did all I could in regards to drivers, etc.

Good luck, cause this is one kick ass patch!

Look in your C:\Windows\System32 dir.

This was the problem, I didn't even have PB installed. I looked at the evenbalance site again and downloaded pbsvc and I was able to join a game just now with no problems.

The infantry-only map I was on though was mostly a grenade spam-fest which brings back bad memories.

And is there a better way to change the default key controls? This was another one of the bad things I remembered about BF2, and I still don't have any luck for making a simple change, for example changing crouch from Left Control to Left Shift. It always says there's a duplicate key in another section.

Yeah BF2 is fucking stupid like that. You can just go through all the controls pressing escape to clear them before putting in yours. It's tedious but it works.

Really?

You mean you don't get the Unmodified Content error on every map change that hundreds of people get?

Umm.. I just installed BF2 then 1.41 then 1.50. My crouch doesn't work no matter what key I put it on? Anyone else?

delete your config file or reset to default from the game and re-bind them. many had to do this for some reason.

I've tried applying defaults, but it still says Left shift is binded in helicopter controls when I don't see it there at all. Unless I'm blind.

Is there a 3rd party tool to do the keys?

oh the left shift problem has always been there. the only way to solve that issue is to go into the config file in notepad and manually erase the shift binds in helicopter/boat (all vehicles) sections. i always use shift to crouch and ctrl for sprint and always had to manually do this for BF2.

while you're there you can also set space to parachute like 2142.

i too am running win7 x64 (RTM) and have had no problems. i never even updated punkbuster from their site. just used whatever BF2 installed for me. ive probably put in about 6-8 hours since the patch without issue.

EA really fucked the game up. Now J10 is so easy to shoot down. Jets seem to be slower and has a bounce.

I used to love shooting j10 with f35 now there's no challenge.

Has anyone got this to work on a 59 Hz display? Apparently, if the game can't start at 60 Hz, it crashes. I want to put this on my laptop, which will not do 60 Hz. I tried some of the DirectX refresh rate forcing programs, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas? The laptop has an Nvidia GPU, FWIW. I have no problems running it on my desktop, but I use it less and less these days.
