some apps, such as office apps, can be run straight from the run dialog, e.g.: to start word, you type in : winword

Your way: Pressing Windows key & R, typing winword, pressing enter

Quicklaunch way: Click button.

And that assumes the app can be run straight from the prompt.

I think I like the Quicklaunch way better.
