I voted Audi
AS you said everybody has a 3, I like the 3
He said he's willing to spend up to 25K for the Audi I guess he has already made price a consideration. With warranties and such it won't cost more to maintain and if its a dog he can sell it.

My local Subaru dealer has several new 2005 WRX's for around $23k

Yeah, I know. I just don't like VW's.

too bad. IMO they make the best hatches. btw the audi A3 IS a VW, much like the A4 and the jetta.

Yeah, but it says Audi, so I can more easily lie to myself. :)

Does VW directly control and design Audi's or is it more like the Ford/Mazda relationship? Because I would buy a Mazda, but probably not a Ford.

The golf/A3 and the jetta/A4 (some model at least) share a common platform. I guess it's like the ford/mazda relationship. But again, Audi's reliability record for the past 10 years or so isn't much better than VW, and mazda's past offerings (maybe except the protege) has not been so solid either.

But AFAIK the A3 is pretty much just a dressed up golf (probably heavier as well) with a higher price tag. IMO screw the badge and go for the best car.

Mazda 3 from a looks & value standpoint is the clear winner. It's got great options for the vehicle class it's in also.

I'd also suggest looking for a Saab 92-X. It's basically a WRX with a bit more luxury items in it. It's a great value if you can still find them.

WRX. Best bang for the buck. New looks are actually quite nice in person and the interior for the 06 is vastly improved. Quite nice in fact.

I hate the look of the 3 and it really isn't in the same class as the other 2 IMO.

The new VW/Audis are really a step back for the company IMO. In looks, design, and especially performance. Every review I've read on the A3 said it was a gutless dog.

edit: The Saab 9-2x has been discountinued and the new 06 Imprezas picked up almost all of the improvements.

Sure the WRX is fast, but it's probably one of the fugliest cars on the road.

I would tell myself that I was getting the Mazda 3, go out to the dealer, test drive it, like it and be all set to buy one then I would sutpidly decide that I should test drive other cars as well and go test drive the Subaru WRX for comparison. Then I would go test drive a Mustang GT "just for fun" and end up buying that. (My history of buying practical cars sucks, but I have a lot of fun driving.)

VW and Audi are the same company. The A4 is the Passat platform though, not the Jetta. Jetta and Golf are the same car and the A3 is built on that platform.

There's a reason that site doesn't list the weight of the Golf. It weighs over 3000lbs.

or maybe it's just because it's not yet a production car? hmm?

I was joking. And it is a production car in Europe.

I have test drove a Mazda3 and was pretty impressed. Tomorrow I'm going to go test drive a WRX (I haven't driven manual in a while, so this could be interesting ;))

I don't know if there's a VW dealer in town (surely there is) but I will give them a chance, at least a test drive.

The Audi A3 2.0T and Mazda 3 have been compared by either R&T or C&D. The A3 beats it the MZ3 in accerlation, but the MZ3 wins all other categories (price, braking, road holding, economy).

Really? That's pretty impressive.
I really am leaning towards the 3.

Autoweek named the Mazda 3 as the best economy car, followed by the Honda Civic, and the Audi A3.
