Battle of the Hatchbacks!

I've been looking at new Hatchbacks priced at around $25k and below.

So far, the ones that look good are:
Mazda3 Hatch - 160 hp, 30+ mpg, looks nice

Subaru Impreza WRX wagon - 230 hp, ~27 mpg (premium fuel), AWD, looks okay

Audi A3 - 200 hp, 30+ mpg (premium fuel), looks nice

Which one would you get?
Other options will be added if recommended.

Yeah, the Mazda3 is fun to drive, but the WRX is much more powerful and the Audi is supposedly more "refined."

I have not driven the Audi because there aren't any Audi dealers within 100 miles of me.

Depends on how much you want to spend, econ, sport, luxury.

Insurance could be a factor too.

My vote, WRX> Mazda 3> Audi A3

Well, spending around or under $25k. I would like something that is nice, fun, and decently economical. Which all of these fit into.

The WRX and A3 use more expensive gas, so that's a small strike against them, but they also have much more HP!

I should call my agent and find out what the insurance rates are for the cars. That could be the deciding factor.

Well, I've never owned a car that had a good amount of power and performance (and I'm 27), so I think it would be a nice change.

Of course, the Mazda3 is the cheapest, most economical, and lowest in the performance rankings, but it is still a fast and fun little car.

wrx. you just don't see as many of them on the road.

yah, you'd get the rarity factor working in your favor then, tho i did vote for the mazda, cuase that'll be less to insure....wrx's are HORRID for insurance because of moron's who wrap em around phone poles and such.

the winner! 😛

V-6 lacks low-end power and is, oddly enough, thirsty. Ugly 'silver' interior trim with PITA stereo that can't be upgraded. Or did they fix that in 2006 model? Looks very good though.

The stereo can be upgraded... Metra recently came out with a dashkit (little pricey though) featuring the integrated climate circuitry that fits a DIN-sized receiver.

The silver isn't bad as long as you've got the dark gray interior. Looks hella ugly on a beige interior though.

EDIT: I'm very happy with mine 😀

That's one thing I really don't like about the Mazda3, the dash/stereo deal. And the lack of an AUX in jack.

WRX > mazda3 > audi in this line up... AWD power FUN 🙂 however, I t hink it's a little on the ugly side... and I didn't know you could nab one for under 25k (or are you mixing new/used?).

mazda3 if you're looking to save some money, cause preimum is a pain... granted, I'll have to go that route in a couple of years if I can pony up the cash (turbo 🙂).

Taking into consideration looks and overall performance...I have no idea. I like the 3 and A3 lookwise, whereas the rex is neither here nor there. performance obviously goes to the rex. fit and finish and overall luxury for the price...between the 3 and A3 again.

What a tough life you lead 😉

WRX is big enough that i'd call it a wagon instead of a hatchback, and i dont' like wagons. Mazda 3 is nice, but everyone and their dog has one these days. The Audi will be a LOT more expense, to buy, to maintain, and for gas. I'd go with the Mazda 3.

Mazda 3 Sport: My friend has the sedan with the 160hp engine and I've driven it around before. Where's the torque?

WRX Wagon: Although I hate the way it looks, it seems to be the most practical of the three.

A3: I like this the most, but only because I'm a VW fanboy 😉

However, I think the Mazda 3 would be the best option. Insurance for a WRX and an Audi will rape you. Not to mention the required gas grade.

I'd go with the 3
