Batteryless Flashlight for $15

ComputerGeeks is selling the Shake Flashlight that doesn't require any batteries and since it uses an LED bulb, it should be a long while before you would need to replace the bulb. Here's a snippet from the product page

- Waterproof case will even float
- Maintenance Free
- 30 seconds of shaking powers LED for up to five minutes

It looks a lot like the Forever Flashlight that you can buy at numerous other places such as ThinkGeek. As a matter of fact, ComputerGeeks even uses that name in their product description. Most of these places sell it for at least $30 which is the micro-size. I have no idea whether ComputerGeeks is selling the micro-size or the standard flashlight.

it's a coil of wires, and a magnet. you shake the flashlight, and the magnet moves through the coil's center. this charges a capacitor. the capacitor powers the bulb. since the bulb is an LED, which is lower power, you get long usage out of the shaking. it works, and it's great for emergencies, unless you have no arms.

Why buy it from Computer Geeks for $13 plus shipping. Get one at Fry's if you have one for $10. It's called a Micro Forever Flashlight. Was going to pick one up today. Sorry I can't seem to find it on Outpost.com.

There are a bunch of shake light copies on the market. Here is one of the originals and still one of the best:

However, I still see very little purpose for one of these lights. A small keychain light that runs off of lithium batteries has a shelf life of 10yrs and will be brighter than these lights. Sure, the runtime won't be incredible but they'll put out usable light for many many hours.

Actually, there are a lot of solar-powered flashlights out there. Obviously they charge up a battery and don't run directly off the solar cells.

I got one of these from HSN for about $28.00 shipped after coupons.. about a year ago.
It is the Forever flashlight brand. Besides being a neat conversation piece it was really a waste of
money IMO...

traditional keyboard LEDs are like 300 mcd, white LEDs come in the 10000mcd range. i have a red one rated for 30000 mcd.

They are for emergencies. Throw them in your trunk and forget about them. I bought the NightStar II's as Christmas presents last year.

I got a wonderlite - same thing. Mine only has one LED, and it functions ok as a torch and a flashlight. It's definitely an emergency only thing, but works well with only a little shaking. This works better than my keychain LED light, as the reflector focuses the light on this light, while the keychain light is more diffuse. I may get another one at Fry's, the keychain lights are $6 or $7, not much cheaper.

I got a Forever Flashlight last year for Christmas. I don't use it very often, but there were two times when the power went out for several hours in a row at night that I was glad I had it. The light it creates is kinda strange, it's a very direct beam of light, unlike a normal flashlight which produces a glow around the brighter area of light. My LED is light blue, not clear. For $15, it's not a bad thing to have in your car. Mine is now in my car because the batteries in my car flashlights kept going dead. It would be nice to have if my car ever breaks down at night and I have to walk or something. It's about equal in weight to a MAG light, I guess because of the magnets which are pretty strong (keep it away from your computer!).

I may just pick up one just to try it out. Worst case scenario, it'll be my flashlight in the trunk like most of you are saying. I don't have one in there at the moment and would be nice to have.

Just don't have your back turned on someone when your shaking it up, they might get the wrong idea 😱.
I have a Black & Decker rechargeable for around the house. It runs off of the Versa Pack batteries, and was a really good investment. The charger also has a spare slot for charging a second battery. In the car I have a rechargeable that plugs into the cigarette lighter and is always ready.
