I have a Lenovo Ideapad 720s. I bought it as an open box from Micro Center. Worked great for a while and then the computer would just start turning off when the battery got to 30% or so. I thought maybe there was some power drain happening when it was shut down and unplugged, because I would often have it on and plugged in at 100% and then shut it off and unplug and a week or two later turn it on and the battery is down to about 40%. So I went through the bios and turned anything off I could find that would have to do with power draw during system off. No effect, the laptop still shuts off around 30% battery, and the battery seem to drain really fast. OK, so next step I did was I bought an OEM battery and replaced the battery. No effect, the system is still powering off when the battery gets to 30% or so and it still seems to drain like crazy when the laptop is shut down but not plugged in.

What else can I do? I think I just got a defective unit or something.

Specs:
i5-8265U
8GB Ram
256GB SSD
Win 11

That thread mentions turning off always on USB as a fix for the phantom drain.

Don't know if you've tried that?

see battery life cycle tab

Regarding the 30% shutoff you could try running lenovo vantage to check battery health and reset the battery gauge.

If that doesn't do anything maybe try undervolting it. A lot of sites recommend using throttlestop.

Don't take this the wrong way but are you shutting the laptop down by using the Windows menu and choosing shut down or just pressing the power button or closing the lid?

For the shut down at 30% check your advanced power settings.

Yes, that is off for sure. Same thing with the Win 11 setting for fastboot or whatever it is that takes a little battery when off. I will try using lenovo vantage and see what that says.

Using Start > Shutdown, but I will check this to make sure, thanks.

Still having issues. Tried installing Lenovo Vantage to see if that could help but no dice. I've also gone into the bios and disabled anything possible about fastboot/sleep/usb device charging. Any other ideas? Starting to seem more like a hardware issue now. I charged it to 100% and left it unplugged 48 hours and the battery was at 0% when I turned it on this morning.

Something is not right with your equipment (ie, computer and/or charger/adapter).

Make sure that you have the correct power adapter for your machine as it was open box.

30% is the wrong number for low power on that model (see user guide). It should be 20%.
Critical battery with shutdown as shown by the amber flashing indicator light on side of machine is between 1 - 5%.

You're gonna need to decide if it's the laptop, battery or the power adapter.

With adapter plugged in & laptop off, charge battery to full (till steady white light shows on laptop power indicator). Leave machine plugged in & feel the power adapter a bunch of hours after the battery has charged, It should be cool (ie, room temperature) as the machine should have cut off essentially all internal power as the laptop is off & the battery is fully charged.

If the adapter is warm, then the laptop is consuming significant power in the off mode with a fully charged battery and therefore, something is wrong,

Feel the battery, it should be cool/room temperature (as it should not be taking in any current as it is fully charged). If it is warm, then there's something going on with the battery. It may have an internal short or even be having the wrong voltage supplied to it; eg, over volted. If the battery is cool/room temperature, then feel all over the laptop for any warm area. If/when you find a warm area then you found the place in your laptop where the power is being consumed. In that event, you will need to have your machine replaced or repaired.

Good luck

Check for UEFI/BIOS update? We have a similar problem with an Acer laptop that shipped with Windows 10 and sleep worked fine, very low battery drain while in sleep (not hibernate) mode, would last at least entire week in 'sleep/standby' mode with lid closed. After upgrading to Windows 11, which Acer says is 'compatible' but does not officially support (no W11 drivers available from Acer for this model, only W10), something has changed. In sleep mode, will go from full charge to low in about three days, not even using it.

I remember seeing an option like 'wake this PC to perform maintenance or updates', something that logically could bring or keep the system in a state of high power consumption but not remember where, whether it was in W10, W11.
