The German engineers tend to believe that they're so incredibly good that they don't need a margin of error. :p

ZV... Now thats the truth for sure...

Will say I`m not 100% right either it still could be something else just real strange I had the same problem last week... Also the starter is not hard to change on one of those its located up high and only has 3 bolts with easy access besides the battery cable and solenoid wire...

Also I got the story later that it was turning over kinda slow and weak for the past few days prior to it failing... First thing I did was test the battery which load tested bad even after charging... Replaced it and finaly found the starter dead as well after talking to the stealership (they did want it brought in for them to check it)... Anyhow hope the OP reports just what the issue turns out to be after replacing the battery... Staying tuned...

ZV... Know your a smart cookie for sure & thanks for your input...;)

Heh, reminds me of changing the starter in my 951. There's a factory sticker from Bosch on it with big, bold letters, "WARNING! Do not strike with hammer!" Apparently they're expecting the armature to develop burnt spots...

ROFLMAO... Bet they have a whole warehouse full of starters with dents in them...

But have seen a ton of DelcoRemy starters that way but still doing the job...

Nah, they're just expecting American caveman backyard mechanics to treat it like a Chevy when the solenoid starts to stick ;)

Always got a kick out of the first bosch starter i tore down. It had a planetary reduction drive in it, so more torque out of a smaller motor. Less weight, etc.
Fuckin' krauts. :awe:

I had (OK, still have) a 914 that I used to always carry one of those giant Craftsman screwdrivers in so that I could thwack the starter and then jumper the terminals on the bendix when it would refuse the office. Used that method about every 5th start for a year or so until I finally got around to changing the starter. :D

Dealer just left me a vm saying they think it's the starter. It's getting the voltage and it's "dead".

They told me it was $800 for the starter, but....

My car is still under CPO warranty. I'd think the starter would be covered. lol

Hey ZV, what about the other way around. A failing starter could have an increased amp draw that sucked the life out of his old battery.

That's what the dealer said.

The battery was near end of life anyway.

Since the battery was on the weak side, the failing starter really took it to the battery because it had to crank harder and longer, putting extra work on the battery when it was it's weakest. As the battery got weaker, the starter, which was already failing, had to work even harder and harder because it wasn't getting enough juice, creating a "house of cards" situation where they killed each other.
