I ran Macrium and the closest thing I see in it is under the backup menu 'Image disk' - is that really the right way to copy this disk?

I started Marcium and the option I saw recommended and it is not a comfortable UI process. It's off and running doing all kinds of things on its own not creating comfort.

It had two devices selected with buttons between them not making it entirely clear what it had defaulted to copy to and from, and had options checked about things like creating USB.

Great - I spent 10 hours doing a non-quick format overnight of the new drive, and that seems to have been wiped out by the aborted clone attempt. Have to reformat. And I'm assuming I have to not use the quick option again, if I want to get the benefit of all the checking.

OK, system formatting the next 10 hours. Then back to figuring out how to copy over the data again.

Use the quick format, for God's sake. You've already had the benefit of all the checking.

Well, I didn't get an answer in time to whether the quick format the second time would preserve the checking from the first time - and now there's no interrupt option.

It can't be this hard to copy over the data? Despite the unknown problem preventing the first clone attempt from finishing.

I'm wondering if there's an option for copying it in the Windows 10 disk utilities.

I ran Macrium and the closest thing I see in it is under the backup menu 'Image disk' - is that really the right way to copy this disk?

From what you've written earlier, you want to clone your old drive to your new drive. Thus use the clone option in Macrium, and triple check that it is setup to clone the correct drive to the correct desination drive. (Your 1tb old to the 3tb new). If it doesn't let you resize the partition form 1tb to 3tb, you can do that later in windows. Off the top of my head, use the "clone this disk" option under the drive you want to clone (should have a check mark by it too). That should pop up a screen to select the destination drive.

An image is a big file you make that can later be used to restore the drive/partitions etc. on one or more drives. It is what you use for long term backups. A clone is where you make an exact copy direct from the source drive to the new empty drive. An image can be used instead of a clone but it will likely take longer as you make the image file "backup" and then restore the image to a new drive. And don't bother with a full format unless you're paranoid about the new drive being bad or are putting these disks into a real server/NAS box etc..

"Would "xcopy e:\ f:\ /e /h /k" copy all the files from e: to f:?"

Eh, try http://www.codesector.com/teracopy then

I'm really not locked into a 'clone' and just copying all the files seems fine - an image really not the right approach. Which is why I wonder about the xcopy.

I looked at that teracopy and it looks like a good program for copying some files, but doesn't really looked designed for copying a whole drive of files?

It can handle a lot of files in my experience. Copy in smaller batches, 10-30gb at a time.

I have a 98% full 1TB drive with hundreds of programs, and really don't want to try to cut it into batches to copy.

Well I kicked off another try of a clone on Easus after letting Windows do a 'check and repair' disk when rebooted. Not looking forward to this, it's already doing the same thing of continually increasing the estimated time - it started it at under 3 minutes remaining. Now it's about 8 minutes. I cancelled yesterday when it was at like 7 hours done, 6 hours remaining. Progress is ~20%.

I can't believe nobody else is chiming in here... This is painful to watch.

You don't need to clone/image the drive. In fact, it's probably exactly what you DON'T want with a trashed drive. It's just directories and files. Drag and drop the damned things from the first drive to the second in Windows Explorer. Yes, xcopy would also work, and is probably a bit faster than using Explorer.

Stop whatever the hell it is you're doing, quick format the drive, copy all the files over.

That's what I was thinking. Since easeus un-formats the drive, I'll let it run a little longer just in case, then cancel, quick format this time, and xcopy.

Even trying to cancel easeus, it's been a few minutes sitting in a 'loading' window after the cancel...

One thing I noticed on the second full format is it went from 10 hours to 7 hours for some reason.

hm. The second file xcopy tries to copy is pagefile.sys, and even running it as administrator, gets a 'sharing violation' error. I probably need to change swapping to another drive?
