I have oil heat and a hot water tank, city water. The water is still hot like normal, but my heat won't actually come on. So I know my oil levels are okay..And I changed the batteries in my thermostat, and still nothing comes on. A friend said it could either be a pump, or a valve somewhere, I forget what he called them.

I just wanted to get some opinions to see if maybe it's an easy fix before I go call the furnance guy who's going to kill me with some $100+ fee just to look.

it could be an air lock or the pump.

I don't know much about HVAC, but you need to see if the pump is working.

try opening a valve and see if air comes out.

Don't you have some sort of pressure gauge?

9 times out of 10 it's air in the system. Look for bleeder valves on the baseboard and open them slightly. You'll have to put some water back in.

The other time is a failed recirculator pump. When you find out your problem, let us know what the 11th out of 10 is ;)

Seriously check those two possibilities out.

Thanks for the replies, I will check my pressure gauge later today, and I will look for bleeder valves. Haven't seen any just casually looking around at my system, but obviously they should be there somewhere...
