I am looking for the best heatsink for air cooling for my barton 2500+ on a gigabyte 7n400 pro 2 ver 2 mobo

Just ordered the thermalright si-97. It is light and very versatile. It only weighs 280g and can be mounted in two different ways without any extra mounting brackets. It may cost more than others but it's imo the best Athlon XP heatsink out right now. When I get it I can let you know how it cools my XP3200+, right now I'm running F@H (wich puts my proc at full load) I can't get my temps below 55c with the stock cooler and as5. I'm hoping with as5 and this thermalright paired with a vantec stealth fan my temps will run 5c lower🙂

wow thats hot i have an amd athlon xp 2500+ oc to an athlon xp 3200+. the cooler i have is an http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-186-105&depa=0 and my temp at idle is 27-30c and 36-40c load

Well...OK...maybe it's not the best.....and it's huge and loud, but there is a certain cool characteristic about having an airliner engine in your box 😉

only prob here is my mobo doesn't have the 4 holes for bigger heatsink

mobo 30c
this is all non load I had the heatsink backwords (my bad) was 82+c
I have gotten a few replies re the alx-800 an have be definately contemplating it but how about these heatsinks with fan

IIRC the Thermalright is a better deal.. it was the best deal when I was looking at heatsinks for my A64

hard to beat an XP-90 aside from the XP-120...
best bang for buck. quite possibly THE best coolers irregardless of $ infact.

SI-97 would be pretty much same I'd think.

oh forgot I had the 2 front case fans in backwords due to no directional infor inclued so now cpu running @ 48C

Watercooling is a great way to keep your Barton chilly and keep the noise to a minimum. I could keep my load temp 8C above ambient and 3C idle.

One thing you should keep in mind about the Thermalright SI-97.
It is still a very large heatsink.
I just installed one on my son's box and had to remove his power supply to install it.
I wound up redoing it a couple of times cause I kept bumping it messing up my TIM application. (rerouting wiring).

If your case is small it may be a litle difficult.

OK... I'm preparing to get flamed... ok... flameproof vest is on and secured... here goes...

...I have a Thermaltake Silent Boost K7 on the way.

Why? At less than $20 it's cheap (sorry, I can't see spending $50 on just a heatsink, much less water cooling) and it's gotten numerous good reviews... well.. outside these forums anyway... a google search will reveal this fact.. 🙂 Plus, other popular HSF's (several Zalmans) don't fit my mobo. I know going into it that it's not as quiet as it's rated (21dBA my foot!) but that's OK with me. Beats the stock cooler for my Barton 2500. Plus it should give me room to overclock a bit.

Using one on my HTPC. (Replaced the fan with a Panaflo H1A though)

Even with very limited airflow in the case (1-80mm & 2 60mm Panaflo L1A's PS controlled) it never tops 46C under load.

I have seen some posts saying that the base need lapping, but mine came with a mirror finish.
That said, it is one of only 2 TT products I have purchased and still use. 😱

antec plus 1080 amg-with 2 rear exhausts fans, 1sid intake fan for graphics card, 2 fron intake fans(side and front fans are pc toys 52.6cfm)
gigabyte 7n400 mobo
athlon 2500+ baton 30th week '03 build
geforce fx 5600 graphics card
1 80gig maxtor hd
1 160gig maxtor hd
1 dvd rom
1 dvd +/- rw
1 cd burner
floppy

now my main concern is the heatsink and fan for my processor but am on a budget under $30. And I realy do appreciate all the feed back I am getting

Not going to say it's the best, but I run a ALX-800 on almost the same rig(exact same cpu and mobo) and it does very well. However, I made the initial mistake of placing a low CFM fan on that heatsink and it didn't work well. I would suggest a mid to high CFM fan, so at least 40CFM, 50+ if you can handle the noise.

I wanted to put the Zalman 7000 series on it, but this mobo doesn't have the 4 holes needed, so whom ever keeps recommending it, stop, he can't use it.

Anyone know of the XP-90 will fit on this or are those for P4/A64 only?
