no because he has a HORRIBLE attitude. Way to cocky, I don't care if he is good he shouldn't be talking crap about teamates and demanding things like his own personal area in the locker away from the team. This a team sport he is being PAID to have fun. He obviously doens't know how lucky he is, I would give anything to be able to play in the big leagues. I've seen too many interviews where his answers have made me realize what a jerk he is. Will never be the best or one of the best in my eyes no matter what numbers he puts up. Not to mention the fact that there is a VERY high chance he has been using drugs to help him get where he's at.

on topic -

barry is a great all around player. he can field, he can hit, he can hit for power, and he has (well had) the ability to steal bases. no one is close to his 500-500.

he will be remembered for his home runs, his steroid allegations (that's all they are now, allegations, you haters), and his cold shoulder to the media. as a guy that grew up with his dad and his godfather with the media, understandably he's not a big fan of them. he's also not going to use them to further his cause.

i see barry as one of the best. maybe not the best, since its so hard to quantify what is better - a pitcher or a hitter, since both can get you out of massive jams, but definitely one of the best. anytime you rise to third on a highly coveted list is saying something. he is a very smart baseball player - a student of the game. he understands what adjustments need to be made, which is why he has so much success. he has a quick release in the outfield. barry is a great player because he changes the dimension of the game - everytime you come to SF, you have to be prepared for barry. not every team has that one player that makes you go "oh crap i'm going to sf... we'll just walk him and hope for the best."

When Barry Bonds retires he will probably be remembered for two things - his home runs and his cold shoulder towards the media.

We remember Babe Ruth as arguably the greatest player to play the game, the guy so good he called his own shot in the World Series. He was a charitable guy who was nothing more than a big kid. There are stories of him ducking out from games between innings to visit local children?s hospitals close to ball parks and having a drink with fans after games at the local watering holes.

What stories about Berry Bonds the ambassador for baseball are we going to remember?
If anything we will forget about Bonds long before we forget about Babe Ruth

Hank Aaron was a great player too!

Hmm... never heard of this about Babe Ruth. All I've heard was that he was a womanizer, drunk, and kinda fat when he got old.
Bonds works hard and a great family guy.

I suppose you never heard of Yankees stadium as the house the Ruth built either,
nor the fact that Babe Ruth played in a LOT more World Series than Barry. ;)

House the Ruth built? nah whats that? ;)
But I do know that there were a lot less teams to contend with to get to the World Series back then.
Also playing for the yankees makes it a lot easier to reach a World Series than playing for the Giants. Just because David Wells has been to more World Series than Barry doesn't mean he's a better player than Barry. Its more to do with the team.

good article on the topic

http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stark_jayson/1365725.html

i agree with what he says...bonds is the greatest of his era...babe the best of his, who is better can never be answered

Bonds no matter what he does will never go down in history like the Babe though, I am not sure anyone could ever top the Babe in the way people feel about him because his mystic just continues to grow

Ruth was Goliath in an era full of Davids. In two different seasons, he hit more home runs by himself than any other team hit. He used to account for around 15 percent of his league's home run total all by himself. Even in the greatest home-run season of all time, Bonds accounted for only about 2 ½ percent of all National League homers last year.

Bonds' career slugging percentage is now up to an incredible .585. But that's still 105 points short of Ruth, who ranks 56 points ahead of the next-closest player in history, Ted Williams.

"He also led the league in slugging percentage 13 times," Spatz says, "in on-base percentage 10 times, and in on-base plus slugging 13 times. Bonds isn't anywhere close to that.

"And if that's not enough," Spatz says, "the guy had a 94-46 won-lost record as a pitcher, with a 2.28 ERA. He also, at various times, led the American League in ERA, complete games, and shutouts."

But since APBA Pro Baseball is statistically accurate, we should be able to come to a reasonably conclusive end if we play through some seasons with the old Yanks and the Giants of today :D

I think the roid thing will ride him no matter what. McGuire is in teh same boat IMO.

And now that the Former trainer of Bonds and others has been arrested for roids does not help. It also explains why Sheffeild got really big AFTER he used the same trainer as Bonds did. Bonds and Shef are really close freinds.

In my mind there is no question that he has used roids in the past. Not sure about present. All of his records should be over turned but that is just my opinion :/

I'd rather have ANY of these guys over Bonds...

Babe Ruth
Lou Gehrig
Ted Williams
Hank Aaron
Stan Musial
Joe Dimaggio
Ty Cobb

They continue to make the baseball more active. Back when the Babe was playing, he was hitting a rock covered with a sock.... It takes a lot more of a man to hit that over a fence than the spring-loaded balls they use now.

The sheer number of games played in a season makes a big difference in opportunity to. So Barry isn't the greatest....he's just good.

It takes more than just muscle to hit HRs. If it really were that easy, pay me and shoot me up with all the steroids you want, I'll be the first chinese ballplayer to hit 800 HRs.

I don't think so either.

It isn't because of his surly nature or the fact he's suspected of taking perfomance enhancing drugs; there are just many greater players like Ruth, Mays, Cobb...

That actual is a MAJOR thing. I have felt a ball from the late 50's to early 60's time and it was a lot softer (core wise). The newwer ones have tighter cores and are more JUMPY.

I agree on that part. People like Araon and Ruth were hitting balls a LOT softer then current ones. So to me Araon and Ruth to me = better players then Bonds ever will be.

i'm canadian, we dont have baseball here :p

there's the montreal expos and toronto blue jays...

Like she said Canada doesn't have baseball:D

Actually Toronto has 2 World Series Championships and Montreal was making a serious run at it in 1994 when they got seriously screwed by the strike. They actually set attendance records that season and if not for the strike things might be totally different there today.

No, emphatically no. He's in a hitter's ballpark, with the short wall in right. The most he hit with Pitssburgh in any season was 36, and his first season in SF he hit 38. In the first season of SBC Park, he hits 49, which was his highest total until then. Granted, Ruth had the short porch in right as well at Yankee Stadium. It'd be interesting to see the breakdown of homers at home and away for both players.

Much as I hate to say it, Alex Rodriguez has to be considered the best pure hitter right now... Bonds really doesn't hit much other then homers, much like McGwire did during his 70-homer season.
