Then how come we haven't been able to "cut it off?"

Plus, it's not like we spent that money in Iraq all in one shot. We borrowed it. Our children's children's children's children are going to paying for it with their tax dollars. That doesn't sound like we stopped or cut anything, now does it?
Then there's the fact that we spent the money in Iraq. Meaning that it is virtually gone from our domestic economy. Feel the current economic pinch? Don't buy into the media propaganda of it being the fault of subprime mortgages, that's the cost of Iraq getting us from behind right now.
At least if we had spent those entitlements here domestically, that money would still be in our own economy...

I'd rather give $3 trillion to Halliburton than $3 trillion a year to any special interest group. I'm talking about cutting off recurring costs. Entitlement costs are recurring and never end.

Me buy into media propaganda? I hate the media and what they stand for. I don't feel any economic pinch, I'm still moving up in the world. Subprime? What the hell happened to you Vic? You're not the man I used to know.

Huh? How is Halliburton NOT a special interest group?? And have you actually seen what we've spent our money on in Iraq? I think it would be more than fair to call them entitlements. We're paying for their UHC ffs.

What happened to me? Are you reading your own posts? Look, right wing ideology might have its merits, and you could certainly argue those merits all you want, but wake up man your right wing leaders have already utterly and completely betrayed that ideology in ways far far worse than anything you could possibly think to accuse Obama of. This country simply cannot afford to let you guys keep pretending anymore.

indeed :)

I'm a classical conservative, but the greatest threat to modern America is evidently emanating from this neoconservative idea of being world police, combined with massive spending in every sector. It's surreal, but I can almost guarantee that spending will EASE under a (D) President compared to our out-of-control (R) masters.

Oh, just so you know I went around and read some of his posts in other threads... JS80 says things like this:

It's quite ironic that he, as a fake African American, was able to rise above and go to frickin Harvard (probably on a free ride) and he's using black plight as his platform.

Things like that strongly suggest to me that you're wasting your time.

I keep hearing that phrase "throwing his GM under the bus". I think that's an over-the-top description.

He said she admitted to him that she was sometimes afraid of walking past black men on the sidewalk (or something similar) and said he cringed when she sometimes used a racial or ethnic sterotype.

Frankly both things are fairly common.

As a half black, half white guy, he's acknowlegding those things come from both sides (races). His speech wouldn't have been fair if only focused on one side, and he's uniquely qualified to address this issue.

Fern

I think that speech was shockingly honest. I'm not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing for him, but it was at least honest. I really don't know if America is ready for an honest discussion of race... but it definitely seems like Obama's going for it.

I for one am really glad. We finally have someone here who is willing to say something in a speech besides "RAH RAH AMERICAN FLAG WHOOOO". I feel like in the end it might hurt him, but there's a small glimmer of hope in me that people are ready for a politician who can say these sorts of things. I guess we'll find out.

Careful, you might get accused of drinking the kool-aid. We all know that politicians are only supposed to kiss the flag and spout doublethinking rhetoric on the "issues," and that all this honest and open talk from Obama just makes him an "empty suit demagogue."

I just don't understand how someone like you would back someone who is so socialist for the sake of leaving Iraq. And I meant Corporate entity vs Socialist special interest group.

I would just like to point out to the people here that are scared of Obama somehow favoring black people over white people, that he is white.

Yes I said it, Barack Obama is white. In fact he probably has more in common with your white ass than he does with Jesse Jacksons black one. So unless your scared of both whitey and darkie, then you shouldn't worry about him.

Yes, it was honest in that he revealed himself as a blame whites blacks are victims race baiter.

Looks like someone didn't listen to the speech, or if you did you didn't understand it.

Simple. Because what's happening in Iraq is fascist, pure and simple. How can you not see that? You're taking my money, our tax dollars, and handing it right over to a for profit corporation against the wishes of the people. That is bullshit. If they want to make profits, they should have to compete in the marketplace, not steal my tax dollars just because they got their puppet elected into office.
Socialism has its flaws, and I oppose it for sure, but at least it takes my money, keeps it in our economy and helps the poor and our infrastructure. And I can actually do something about it and have a say.
Plus, Obama's socialism is grossly over-exaggerated, while the fascism of the neocons is clear as day the past 8 years, stealing our money and handing it to their good-ol-boys.

This is true. He is white. I got flamed for saying this here a couple of months ago. He is also NOT an African-American. His father was a Kenyan, not a descendant of slaves.

I had a GF in high school who was half-black. She never knew her black father (don't jump to conclusions, he was killed in Vietnam) and was raised by her white mother (who was a cop no less) in one of the whitest cities in America. She actually resented it when people told her she was black. Not racism on her part, she just didn't even know any.

Vic - two questions:
1) If McCain promised to cut Iraq off immediately would you vote for him over Obama?
2) If Romney won GOP nom, same scenario, would you vote for him over Obama?

I'll answer for my part.

(1)- Yes, as long as he promised to finish Afghanistan and allow oversight and bidding to save money on logistics as well as provide greater quality.

(2)- Yes, conditions above.

*- some other things would be helpful, such as a reduction in the anti-Iranian rhetoric.

Capitalism and fascism are opposed to each other. I don't see Halliburton and the DoD competing for their money, do you? By supporting fascism, you're just supporting a destructive and undemocratic form of socialism. You're worried about one group stealing your money while supporting another group that actually is stealing money.

It's a meaningless question, because neither of them intend to do anything of the kind. Of the 2 though, Romney is certainly preferable. At least he has somewhat the potential to be a leader, and unlike McCain, wouldn't be just another puppet like Bush.

For the life of me, I don't know how the "right-wing" can pretend to be patriotic and wave your flags. We could have built have something. We could have made America a better place. But instead you sold us down the river to foreign interests, to the tune of $9.3 trillion dollars and growing by another $1.7 billion every single day. You talk all this hot-air about rights and fiscal conservatism and so forth and it's all bullshit. You elect leaders that do exactly the opposite of what you preach, inflicting moral legislation, infringing rights, and selling this country into permanent economic slavery, and then you ignore it all and try to scare us with "oooh big bad socialism is gonna get you" talk. Fsck off. This keeps up and your kind is going to find out that most Dems actually support the 2nd.

My philosophy is if the Republicans in power spent $X trillion, that means that had the Democrats won they would have spend $X trillion * 3. It's like picking lesser of two evils.

Yeah, except that it hasn't actually happened that way since LBJ.

You're in la-la land. Nixon spent more than LBJ. Reagan more than Carter, and Bush more than Clinton. Wake up. Do you think that someone like me, a staunch supporter of sound fiscal policy, would be against the Republicans if they weren't the greater of 2 evils in this regard?
Spout all the rhetoric you want, all I have to do here is point to the facts.

This was probably the best time for Obama. We have 6 weeks before another primary and the 40th anniversary of Dr. King's and RFK's deaths. Remember Dr. King? Well, he said some pretty inflammatory things in his day. No doubt you would be against him if you were old enough at the time (not trying to say Dr. King and Rev. Wright are in the same league, but I hope you get my point).

Damning evidence + P&N fans = so what?

Giving a hallelujah in church is damning evidence? I guess I'll have to be glad we haven't seen any videos of him speaking in tongues!
