This has been the main reason why I'm hesitant to move. I don't want to have to lock up papers etc every time I leave our area.

My boss doesn't seem as concerned about this though.

You think a closed door keeps your papers safe? Desk drawer, papers, key, lock them up.

In my book the ability to close your door for privacy is priceless.

Our department decided to redo the office assignments, because too many workers were not in a contiguous location. One nearby floor to ceiling office with a door and no window was offered to me. I declined. The office was about 8x6 with no ventilation and was located along a semi-busy (read noisy) corridor. The cube that I had occupied was 8x10, at the dead end of the building with a huge window that faced the south. My cactus plants loved the window. Plus staying in the cube meant I continued to work along side of my staff, instead of being 40 feet away. Easy choice, as I was never into the status thing.

I voted Bad Office.

I came from a bad office (next to trash can, fridge, microwave) and am now in a good cubicle. I'd go back to the office if I could. Having my own space with a door I could close was sweet.

I work in HR, so having a space to make private calls or hold 1 on 1 meetings with people was invaluable. In my nice cubicle now, everyone can hear my business and I can hear everyone else's business.

You want sun light? Go outside and take a 10 minute walk. But don't give up the privacy and tranquility of your own office for it. ;)

Decided to stick with the office for a bit yet. Will see what the winter brings re: daylight.

Depends.
I'm biased toward enclosed spaces, so I'd go for the office.
Window: I've got two windows here. One leads out into the shop area, and it's mostly blocked off with taped-up quick-reference papers.
The other window is mostly blocked because it's typically lets in blinding light that would otherwise wash-out my monitor. (Blocked with taped-up paper, because they don't want to buy curtains.)

Rattling: Depends. Some rattling can be remedied by jamming paper or foam into the offending thing. Other rattling will drive you to insanity in an hour. Some people absolutely hate rattling, others don't even seem to notice it.

Shaking: No idea. I've never had to deal with that one. I've never worked anywhere other than the ground-floor. All I've usually had between me and concrete is a bit of vinyl flooring. I'm often doing fine work on circuitboards though, so a shaking desk would probably not work out so well.

But a cubicle........the idea of one doesn't conjure up many pleasant thoughts for me. I don't care for open spaces with numerous people around.

If your office has a nighttime cleaning crew, they open every locked office to vacuum & empty trash/recycle bins.

I've always had cubes.
I am getting an office with a window soon and I can't wait!

The biggest issue is being able to close the door and take personal calls.
I don't do it very often, but it sucks to have to go somewhere and find a discrete place to make a personal call (doctor's office, utility company, rental issue, bank, etc.)
Also, the window will ensure good cell signal, which my cube doesn't have.

Not just those calls, any long call. Hello speakerphone + mute.
