Which would you choose:

Situation:
- Analyst, confidential data
- rare meetings in my office, rare phone calls
- one cubicle in office area of 10 offices
- 90% of the day is spent at my desk working
- 100% of the day is spent with office door open, unless in a rare in-office meeting
- almost all work is computer based (triple monitor)
- currently in the bad office, have been for about 18 months
- unlikely that a windowed office will open in our area for another 6 mos at least, possible much longer than that (presumption is that I'd have 'dibs' on next available windowed office though).

Bad office:
- no window
- big enough, but not large
- smallish desk
- occasional faint rattling noise from hvac
- occasional noticeable vibration, tolerable but sometimes annoying, can shake the monitors, sustained for hours at a time (hvac also?)

Good cubicle:
- huge window that opens
- slightly smaller space than the office
- huge desk
- no rattling
- no vibration
- more shelving/cupboards/drawers than my office
- reasonable level of privacy - everyone else is in an office and our area doesn't have a lot of walk-in traffic. Usually pretty quiet.
- anyone would be able to see my computer monitors over my shoulder as they approach the cubicle

good cubicle is a no brainer.

the rattling and vibration would drive me fucking nuts.

after working at a place for 5 years where i had a corner office to myself with windows, to working in cubicles (while nice spaced out cubicles) i think offices are a complete waste of space for the most part unless you're one of the more important people or always talking to other people and need to shut the door to keep it quiet so others can get work done.

Cubicle by a mile....ok, by a kilometer.

Vibrating desk is unacceptable.

People seeing your monitors....will cut into your ATOT/porn time.....so triple your productivity, get many promotions, and a nice office with windows and a stable desk.

Cubicle because of sunlight, gotta get that sun. Also the bad office vibrating may not be a fixable thing.

I've passed up bad offices for good cubicles more than once. Having a door ain't all that. And especially if the office has constant vibration that is enough to shake the monitors, no way.

The functional window trumps everything else, unless office sex is a real option for you in which case the door is usually necessary. Good cubicle FTW.

To me it really depends on the nature of the confidential data and how comfortable your employer is with having people be able to see what is on your computer monitor. If its really sensitive confidential data, I think your employer would want you to stay in the office with a door, rather than the open cube.

When i was in house counsel I was in a cube, but it was a high wall cube with a door and a bunch of locking file cabinets.

This has been the main reason why I'm hesitant to move. I don't want to have to lock up papers etc every time I leave our area.

My boss doesn't seem as concerned about this though.

Bad office because at least you can close the door. Why don't you try asking facilities about the rattling HVAC?

Office.

Rattle can be fixed(probably minor) and the cubical can have people moved next to you (loud, smelly, etc... I have had them all).

This would probably nix the entire conversation with your superiors if they have half a brain.

Otherwise, I would probably go with the cubicle.

Of course, this entire conversation is moot because you're going to die on Saturday anyway. :p

Since when does productivity lead to anything other than more work?

Also, since when does Justin Bieber work as an analyst?

the worst office i've seen was when they put 5 people into a small office.

While next door a VP office sat empty 4 days a week because the VP only came to that particular building on Fridays. I think he probably had 4 other offices in 4 other buildings for M-Th
LOL

I'm currently in a bad office, but I wouldn't want to be in any of our cubicles. There's HVAC directly in my office, along with our servers. Honestly after being in here for years, it's just white noise and it means I don't have to listen to all the jibber jabber out in the lunch room. I have a window, decent size, so that makes a difference.

We just acquired a nearby building so I'm hoping I can move into there at some point if we ever expand over to it.
