Whenever I insert a blank cd to my burner windows freezes and I have to reboot. I have it plugged into a promise tx2 ata controller card, and the burner is an lg 8523b (52x24x52)

This may be the cause of the problem. Many PCI IDE controllers do not support ATAPI drives like optical drives or Zip drives. Try it on one of the motherboard's IDE channels. Unless someone can correct me and say for sure the TX2 is able to support ATAPI drives...

I believe they can with firmware or driver updates..

But for the most part you are correct, hook it up to a main IDE channel and go from there...

Oh, hadn;t thought of that. I just figured it would work with the cd burner, it reads cds but freezes every time a blank cd is inserted. I am running windows xp. The problem I had with the controller is that my 160 gb drive after format only came up as 127 gbs not 149, so I plugged it back into the main ide channel to get the full amount. When I plugged it back into the ide controller it read as 149 gbs the way it should, but I figured I would plug it back into the main ide channel just to be safe. Oh and incase you are wondering I have 3 harddrives (one is sata though) and 3 optical drives (dvd-rom, dvd burner, cd burner).

May I ask why would you need a cd burner if you have the dvd burner as dvd burners also burn cds 🙂

Cause the dvd burner only burns cds at 20x, the cd burner does it at 52x... I dont need it, its just nice to have.
