First of all, this is NOT meant to be racist at all.

Most people know that asian people are "often" generalized as being POOR drivers.

If you're told something enough, you tend to believe it - that's human nature. I live in Vancouver, BC, which is a large asian community. I've heard people b!tch about bad asian drivers many times, and this *may* have caused me to believe it. A couple of my asian friends have even vouched that they are bad drivers.

Is this generally true? What would make asian people bad drivers? I realize that there's bad drivers of every shape, size, and color, but are asian people particularly worse?

Necro a nearly 10 year old thread?

I don't think so

They are the best drivers in the worst condition. They can get around a congested traffic in minutes. Overall, they're the best drivers in the world. But watch your rear if you're driving next to one of them. :D

being asian does not make you a bad driver. however, having learned how to drive in a different country can result in unacceptable driving practices in this country. so yes, i'm sure a lot of immigrants can be considered "bad drivers", but it has nothing to do with being asian, it has to do with not having learned how to drive in america properly.

I had a Korean friend and a couple of Chinese friend in College... and the all said that they were sucky drivers. Of course, I probably have a skewed set of friends from the norm!?!?! ;)

Fiction

Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot.

All you ignorant @$$es who voted yes are obviously too cowardly to post about it.

well just wanted to mention something.. if you live in CA orange county area... i would stay away from garden grove and westminster... it seems like the older generation of asians are bad drivers.... the ones that have the seat pulled all the way up so their knees are touching the steering wheel, face in near the windshield. Well it doesnt really matter which race because no matter what race you are crappy drivers are everywhere.. but someone asians got into the "stereotype" ( I guess with the slanted eyes thing )...

I tense up and turn off at the nearest exit when I see an Asian woman behind the wheel. I truely fear for my saftey when get within 6 car lengths of them. I cannot count the times I've been nearly turned into, merged into, and t-boned by these women.

My fiancee has the same exact fear as me. Maybe it's an Iowa City thing.

thus supporting my theory :)

seriously, given people born an raised in america, i don't see that much of a difference in driving expertise by race.

Only the ones that drive the speed limit or 5 miles below all the time...even when they are hindering traffic and becoming a traffic hazard by driving the speed limit.

Of course that also goes to all the soccer mom's, Sunday drivers, and people who don't know what in the phuck turn signals are.

How do you know if an Asian person has robbed your house?
Your homework is done, your computer is upgraded, but two hours later, he is still trying to back out of your driveway.

no offense to anyone.

Nope, it's a myth... and has been studied believe it or not. It appears Asians or women or worst drivers because of certain cognitive processes. When you see a bad driver that is non-asian or male, you'll just dismiss it as some 'ass' or idiot. But when you see an Asian or woman driving badly, then you validate that belief with 'yeah, here's another one', and it becomes more salient.

<< Where is the option for "Everyone in Vancouver is a bad driver"? >>

haha!

but then I'd have to add, "All the old people in Victoria are bad drivers". ;)

Good comment, Moralpanic. I was thinking the same thing - I think asian people are worse drivers, but the reasons probably are:
(a) I'm not asian
(b) i've been brainwashed into thinking so

if someone immigrates or visits from another country where people have VERY different driving styles, rules, etiquette -- then yes. But if YOU go to their country, they'd think you suck

Oh they sure as hell are, but that's not the issue in this thread is it ;)

Me and a bunch of friends went to tim horton's after hours and got a ton of stale tim bits and sped around town in two massive boats (like 1980 buicks) throwing timbits at each other.

At one point we chased the other guy up a road, with him in reverse.
Only it was one way road the way we weren't going! (He was at least pointed in the right direction).

Yup victoria drivers are bad bad bad news. I make no bones about that ;)

(Or maybe it's just 18 year males that are really really bored).

Oh yeah, I should add that the cop that pulled us over was really cute so we started hitting on her (she was not impressed).

(No we weren't drunk, just stupid)

But you come to victoria, and I guarantee within a week you will want to go back in time and massacre whatever fvck-wad invented the bicycle.

Ohhhhh cyclists in victoria...they are the absolute worst scum I've ever met. They cruise down the middle of a lane at about 15kph, and then when they come to a turn they just kinda cruise into the dead center of the intersection, stop look around a bit and see if anyone's going to run them over, then when they see that everyone has stopped and is screaming at them they wave a little "thanks for stopping" wave and carry on, quite frequently going on the wrong side of the road.

And, bike lanes don't help at all, we have them on some roads and it makes no difference. Cyclists ignore them.

I also hate cyclists. I've *almost* hit them several times. Not on purpose, of course - it's either drive really close to a cyclist or get in a head on collision.

I have a funny story about cycling.
In the summer, my friend comes over to our place at like 11PM and has a huge gash on his forehead that's bleeding. We asked him what happened, and it turns out he was riding his bike down a hill when a car drove by and some punk high-school kids were yelling at him out the window. So, he fingers them, and not looking where he's going, drives right into the back of an SUV! hahaha :D We laughed our asses off at him.

khtm I think Moralpanic is correct. I've been living in Vancouver for three months now. One of my friends here pointed out how bad Asian driver where and the next thing you know I'm finding way to reinforce this stereotype. I doubt they're any worse then non Asians.

Noriaki I don't know how cycling lane are set up on the Island but when I was in Montreal I avoided them at all cost. Most driver seem to blank out and not notice cycling lanes. It very easy to get hit by some bozo turning right in front of you. I fine you much safer taking up a lane.
