Sausage can be a lot leaner, and again, the quality is extremely variable. You can make your own sausage, and I have.
When I buy bacon, I get the ends and pieces if I can and usually trim out as much fat as practical. I render the trimmed off fat and save for shortening. I season things with the bacon, but only rarely eat bacon as a side dish by itself (e.g. BLT or with eggs).
For me, bacon is a very sometime thing, but I eat a bit of sausage virtually every day (for the seasoning effect in dishes).
