local butcher. You know it is fresh because the hogs are kept behind the store before being 'converted' to product.

I've seen packages with the entire side of bacon in them. i.e. much bigger than an alternator. That reminds me - I forgot to take a picture of the beef I cooked on Christmas - about the size of 2 alternators put together.

I got my son some Wright brand applewood smoked bacon for Christmas. That's right, I got him bacon as a Christmas present. It was thick and tasty.

maple flavored is too sweet. i'd rather have peppered bacon.

that said, we have a local butcher shop where the bacon is still on the slab and they will cut if off for you right there. so we can get bacon by any amount, and thickness we desire, and it's packaged then and there.

Safeway Select used to be my favorite. Maple flavor, if they had it.

However, I have found a new love. Whole Foods' store made brand that they carry in the meat case. Specifically, the dry rubbed variety. It's like a dollar more per pound than the packaged brands and totally worth it. Please try this if you haven't already.

I can't seem to find peppered bacon anymore.

Only Oscar Meyer, store brand, hotel brand (garbage), Hormel (fairly good) and a couple other minors, with nothing very exciting.
