Back to the Classics

Summary below.

I have been playing games heavily for over 8 years now. It started when a friend got me introduced to EQ. When Kunark came out I knew I would be hooked. I played EQ along with warcraft and starcraft. When Diablo 2 and LoD came out I couldn't tear myself away. The group mechanics were just so cool!

Slowly I migrated over to Dark Age of Camelot and Counter Strike. I got on a Cal team and started playing for money in college. I LOVED DAoC but CS was what I was really good at. I was born to play it. My freshman year in college I started going to LAN paryies with the older guys and after just 2 in which I was going +50-0 they stopped playing CS. Eventually I weened myself off of it and played just DAoC.

I made the mistake of wasting money on SWG for a month and then Lineage 2 for a month as well. I had horribly high hopes for SWG but all it turned out to be was fanbois and morons. Lineage 2 at least had cool graphics but once you hit 20 your leveling ground to a hault. Also, it seemed you made just enough money to get your last level's gear; not to mention the deleveling bugs and such that ruined PvP. I wrote a bot and got rich and leveled quickly (24hrs a day who wouldn't) but honestly the bot was infinitely more fun to write than the game ever was to play.

Of course the day that WoW came out I was the second in line at the local EB (behind my brother of course) and ran home. I was the first in my guild to play and posted online how dang laggy it was. After I got 2 60s in 6mo I quit because there's (imo) no game content. It's grind after grind. for more stuff so that you can 1-shot anyone that doesn't play 5hrs a day. Not for me.

After I quit WoW I didn't know what to do except play BF2 so I kind of floated until a friend of mine told me to try EvE. It was alright but After just 8 weeks into the game I had over 250k isk, I was flying a battleship with almost entirely tech2 fittings and whooping all the butt I came across. The game is "point and click and watch". If possibly you could actually fly your ship or fire the weapons I would have kept playing but it was just too easy. Very rock-paper-scissors.

I finally went back to DAoC and it's just as fun as the day I left. I got a bunch of artifacts and scrolls, I went on an arty raid and got flagged. Bought a house, decorated it and gained a whole RR. Sadly though, none of my friends are playing and that is ultimately what games are about for me. A way to keep in touch with my friends that hae all gotten married and moved away.

A couple of weeks ago my brother and I decided to start playing old games again. We installed CS, starcraft, I started playing Rome Total War again and Barbarian Invasion (great game by the way). Then it hit me. Never in my life has a game been more of a timesink for me than Diablo 2. I installed it again and fired it up. Immediately I was taken back by how awful the graphics are by today's standards. I figured I would log in to about 10 people reminiscing over days gone by. Much to my suprise the community is SO active I wonder if anyone ever left.

I still play bf2 a little but I am back in full swing with diablo 2. I have an 83sorc 88 assassin and now 82 necro. With the 1.11 patch I cannot tell you how much more fun the game has become. They decreased the unique drop rate on mephisto and pendle, added INSANELY powerful runeword items, and upped the drop rates of unique monsters. Finally it is better to magic find by actually going through the world playing the game as intended!

For as much as they hype up every game on it's graphics it really does come down to gameplay in the end. Diablo may be repetative but for some reason I have never been able to get enough. I honestly think blizzard could make a killing if they released a new expansion pack for diablo 2; even if it did nothing but revamp the graphics I would be camping out the store as usual. Anyways, my necro is NecroPheelinYa if you play and want to add me to your list. I only play in the evenings when I'm not with my g/f but I'm definately havin fun!!

have you played Oblivion?

[i have 550 hours into it and it has only been out a short time]

awesome - imo

I look at my D2 and LoD discs occasionally and now I have to go play again. I was lucky enough to be a beta tester for LoD, and I lost 1000's of hours playing it. Probably my favorite game of all, DoD, not source, is a very, very close second, if not an outright tie. Day of Defeat 3.1 was one of the best games I ever played, and the online community was pretty top notch. If you found a few good servers, with good admins, the teamwork was there as well as the maturity. Damn I miss those days.

I have a gorgeous and very sweet g/f actually. D2 is simple to level in. The 2 60s in WoW was somewhat of a timesink but I played a Priest and a Warrior and every group needs one so I was almost always the low-level in the group. (I did Uldaman as the sole healer at 31 and I pulled the entire room when I stepped in lol)

Anyways I game maybe a couple of hours a day, it's all about knowing what you want to do and doing it.

Nope I haven't tried it yet but I should probably look into it considering all the threads here on it. I was just tired of spending money on new crappy games and I figured wth D2 is free. 😛

Cs 1.5 is my other favorite but no one has a server anymore. 🙁

apoppin you have a serious problem. I swear it was just a few weeks ago and you had logged 300 hours which is just absurd as it is. Sure I've probably logged 500+ hours on games but that's games that have been out for years like Quake, Diablo 2, etc...

And yeah, D2+LoD rocks. I should pick it up one of these days since you say there is still tons of players. Not sure if I wanna drop the money on it and all the time though if I get addicted again. BF2 + Joint Ops is suiting me well for online play, though I need to get back to Guild Wars, HL2/Source, and others as well as Oblivion and TOCA3.

edit: Oh man... Oblivion came out, what, towards the end of March? Assuming you picked it up right near release, that's like 5-8 hours a day everyday!! A full-time job of Oblivion, well more if you went all out on weekends. Please seek help. 😀

no way i could play that game that long. i got bored after about a week of playing.

Yeah I tend to burn myself out on gaming. I'm proud of my rationing of BF2. I have been playing over 6mo and only have 18k points. I still love logging in. I play for an hour max then make myself log off. Keps me wanting more....come to think of it my g/f uses those same tactics...sneaky b!tch...

1. Eight years is a long time? I've been playing for nearly twice that, and even that is a short time. 🙂

2. Yes, the games you listed do suck. 🙂

3. Diablo 2 is not a classic. Classics are before the onset of the 3D era. 🙂

4. Good. 🙂

what you brag about here is ridiculous - to me. 😉

this is the FIRST game i ever liked this much . . . my first fantasy RPG (i HATED the other 20 i started and never played . . . except KotOR, and it's "lite RPG" with fighting i hate but a great SW story)

. . . and the Oblivion NPCs generally exhibit more intelligence than the average poster here. 😛

god..I missed Diablo 2 LOD

I used to have 10 accounts w/ bunch of sweet stuff...even on classic D2. Damn...but, time goes on lol.

To you and the guy above you how can you say D2 is not a classic. It is one of the highest selling games of all times.

Also, classics are hardly limited to pre 3d games. That's like saying no music produced before the 1800s can be considered a classic work, or no art made prior to 1800 should go into a museum of high art. I consider CS a classic in the FPS genre and I think it would be near impossible not to.

Edit: Me? I knew it... This entire time you were trying to say that you wanted to play a co-op game with your buddy Arch... 😀

classic games are some of the best to play. I had the urge to play Golden Sun so badly that i actually bought a DS Lite and golden sun (fortunately DS lite came out only shortly after I started getting my massive nostalgic urges). I've been playing about 2 hours every night and I love it. I also play starcraft occasionally, but the game has lost it's glamour - especially since it ONLY runs at a certain resolution (think it's 800x600).

Basic writing skills is a facet of intelligence, something you lack heavily in all of your posts. So, with that said, I am not sure you have a leg to stand on.

"a facet of intelligence" 😛

how would you know? . . . you lack intelligence, comprehension and basic reading skills as evidenced by your shoddy posting and inability to make a convincing argument.
i have noticed that most forum idiots resort to criticizing spelling and punctuation when they have nothing worthwhile to say.

as i posted, most of what you obviously find interesting, i consider 'useless'

and UNworthy of my further attention 😛

I must be getting old (and I'm not even 30 yet) if people say 'Back to the Classics' when referring to CS, D2, Starcraft, DAOC.

Oh, and D2 rocks.

I hear ya on this one... Except I have a child and that alone made me feel old... Now D2 is referred as classic and I feel even older... We are all going to die sometime and with each step in life, it becomes a closer reality! :Q

Seriously, for 550 hours, Sierra/Valve would want $11,000...

LOL

and its 585 hours . . . so far . . . Mehunes Razor plugin is released today

good thing i waited to pick up Ep1 for $7.99 at CC this week 😛
[that's $2 an hour . . . Oblivion is less than $0.10 an hour with all the plugins]
:Q

and my landscaping looks nice!
. . . river rock forms the "stone stream" around my olive tree . . .
[not the 'usual' hi-desert landscaping . . . i'd need more 'junk cars' for that 'style'] 😛

😀

edit:
AND I am OLD . . . classic for me would be 'pong' . . . or maybe PacMan

thanks for the PM, ArchAngel777
