Summary below.
I have been playing games heavily for over 8 years now. It started when a friend got me introduced to EQ. When Kunark came out I knew I would be hooked. I played EQ along with warcraft and starcraft. When Diablo 2 and LoD came out I couldn't tear myself away. The group mechanics were just so cool!
Slowly I migrated over to Dark Age of Camelot and Counter Strike. I got on a Cal team and started playing for money in college. I LOVED DAoC but CS was what I was really good at. I was born to play it. My freshman year in college I started going to LAN paryies with the older guys and after just 2 in which I was going +50-0 they stopped playing CS. Eventually I weened myself off of it and played just DAoC.
I made the mistake of wasting money on SWG for a month and then Lineage 2 for a month as well. I had horribly high hopes for SWG but all it turned out to be was fanbois and morons. Lineage 2 at least had cool graphics but once you hit 20 your leveling ground to a hault. Also, it seemed you made just enough money to get your last level's gear; not to mention the deleveling bugs and such that ruined PvP. I wrote a bot and got rich and leveled quickly (24hrs a day who wouldn't) but honestly the bot was infinitely more fun to write than the game ever was to play.
Of course the day that WoW came out I was the second in line at the local EB (behind my brother of course) and ran home. I was the first in my guild to play and posted online how dang laggy it was. After I got 2 60s in 6mo I quit because there's (imo) no game content. It's grind after grind. for more stuff so that you can 1-shot anyone that doesn't play 5hrs a day. Not for me.
After I quit WoW I didn't know what to do except play BF2 so I kind of floated until a friend of mine told me to try EvE. It was alright but After just 8 weeks into the game I had over 250k isk, I was flying a battleship with almost entirely tech2 fittings and whooping all the butt I came across. The game is "point and click and watch". If possibly you could actually fly your ship or fire the weapons I would have kept playing but it was just too easy. Very rock-paper-scissors.
I finally went back to DAoC and it's just as fun as the day I left. I got a bunch of artifacts and scrolls, I went on an arty raid and got flagged. Bought a house, decorated it and gained a whole RR. Sadly though, none of my friends are playing and that is ultimately what games are about for me. A way to keep in touch with my friends that hae all gotten married and moved away.
A couple of weeks ago my brother and I decided to start playing old games again. We installed CS, starcraft, I started playing Rome Total War again and Barbarian Invasion (great game by the way). Then it hit me. Never in my life has a game been more of a timesink for me than Diablo 2. I installed it again and fired it up. Immediately I was taken back by how awful the graphics are by today's standards. I figured I would log in to about 10 people reminiscing over days gone by. Much to my suprise the community is SO active I wonder if anyone ever left.
I still play bf2 a little but I am back in full swing with diablo 2. I have an 83sorc 88 assassin and now 82 necro. With the 1.11 patch I cannot tell you how much more fun the game has become. They decreased the unique drop rate on mephisto and pendle, added INSANELY powerful runeword items, and upped the drop rates of unique monsters. Finally it is better to magic find by actually going through the world playing the game as intended!
For as much as they hype up every game on it's graphics it really does come down to gameplay in the end. Diablo may be repetative but for some reason I have never been able to get enough. I honestly think blizzard could make a killing if they released a new expansion pack for diablo 2; even if it did nothing but revamp the graphics I would be camping out the store as usual. Anyways, my necro is NecroPheelinYa if you play and want to add me to your list. I only play in the evenings when I'm not with my g/f but I'm definately havin fun!!
Summary
1) I have gamed for a long time
2) Most of the games have sucked
3) Got fed up with crappy games and went back to Diablo2
4) love it
