Back sore as hell

So I'm back.

Ha.

But really...my back is soooooore. I've had lower back issues before, but this is more my mid, to perhaps mid-lower back. It's at best, just sore (so where I "feel" it), but at worst, depending on what I do with my abs, or what position I take, it feels like it might seize up.

Is this bad? Can I still lift like this? There's not sharp, constant pain, or nothing that feels like bruising or whatever, just a pretty intense general soreness. I can deal, pain wise, I just want to make sure I'm not killing myself here.

Thoughts?
 
either too much weight, poor form, or a combination of both. for people i introduce to deadlifts, i don't even give them the bar first. i make them do Db deadlifts first and then progress from their.

was anyone checking your form?

Muscular soreness happens when you exercise untrained/undertrained muscles. Unless you post a video, nobody here can say whether you did it correctly.

So you're an expert now? Soreness from weight training is not an indication that you've done something wrong.

not at all. but i have been doing deadlifts with the advice of people here and at the gym longer than some of the guys that come workout with me. the rippetoe video helped put the explanation into words better.
 
Yep muscles do that with new exercises. My legs still get sore after squats. Just don't do deadlifts again until you are no longer sore.
 
The seizing up part might be cause for worry, but soreness isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm no expert (actually a beginner to deadlifting), so take my opinion for what it's worth, but I just started doing them myself, and while they made my back sore, I definitely don't feel like my back is going to spasm or seize up.
 
You might want someone to watch your form like others have said...you might be rounding your back and trying to pull too much with your upper body. Keep your lower back nice and flat and feel your hamstrings, glutes and lower back pull the weight up. Having never done deads before, you'll be sore no matter what, but you should feeling it a lot more in those 3 muscle groups I mentioned than your mid back.
 
If it were an injury, it would likely be a sharp, stabbing pain. However, normal soreness usually just feels like a big bruise. I would say youre ok.

And yes, the first time you do an exercise - especially one as taxing as the deadlift - you are going to be very sore. i wouldnt worry.
