Bachmann: Irene was political message from God

Let's say she's half joking, which seems about right considering everything else she's said. It's hard to tell sometimes if she believes it or if she's just pandering to the Fundie fringe.

One thing's for sure- winning the Repub nomination requires that, and pandering to the overlapping Tea Party base as well, because they're the ones who vote in Repub primaries...

Radicalizing the base helped Repubs win elections for many years, but there are consequences to that, something their leadership is just beginning to realize. They're losing control of the Party to their own radicals, whose message is coherent only to a narrow segment of the electorate.
 
The problem with the Republican party is the hardcore Christian Zionist base influencing the candidates. If they would drop the God this, God that, and Israel this, Israel that, and return to fiscally conservative policies and small government then they might be able to attract me back. Right now the only candidate that falls into that category is Ron Paul. If a 3rd party would like to take up that challenge and those views, then I would vote for them,

Notice the very first line:

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said yesterday that Hurricane Irene was a political message from God, the St. Petersburg Times reported. Today, however, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota representative said the remark was in jest.

So what is it that we have here.

Why didn't the title read, Bachmann jokes about Irene being a message from God and some laugh and some lose their minds? Is the intention just to insight outrage just to sell papers and gather eyes for ad revenue? I think it is.

And it's pretty sad.

Wow, I clicked on this thread thinking "Here we go again, another flame thread" but, I am actually impressed. She was CLEARLY kidding. Not that I care, I dislike all politicians.

I'd think most people by now would know that you cant trust the media. You can't trust the left wing or the right wing stuff. It is all spin.

Is "joking" really that much better? I think the death toll stands at around 40 right now. Which, while not a tremendously large number of people for a natural disaster hitting some densely populated areas, is probably still more deaths than you want to joke about.

Bachmann really needs to go away. She has zero chance of being our next President, and I think she's really damaging the rest of the Republican party by association. And while the Democrat in me says that every time she opens her trap she helps out President Obama, I think that ultimately we're best served by having a real debate in politics.

Thinking all the media is equally distrustworthy, all the time, is just as dumb as always believing everything everyone says. With your approach, you've opened yourself up to being able to easily disregard things you don't want to hear, regardless of whether or not they're true.

I trust what I see with my eyes and apply logic to it. Thus, when I watched this clip I clearly seen it was a joke. Try not to be so daft.

A real debate? Like when you watch them on TV and no candidate answers the question? Like "How do plan on dealing with the Social Security shortfall?" Well, let me tell you, I served my state in IL, blah blah and I want to bring Healthcare to everyone"... That great, but answer the damn question. None of them do (repub and dem alike) and you CALL THAT A DEBATE? They talk past each other. They never answer the question. That isn't a debate.

To declare war, a pres has to go through congress etc
To push the nuke button they just have to have a 20 min convo with a couple of advisors

We can blame God or not, but for 4+ billion years God has usually delivered good weather, some times the weather is not so good, and every once in a while God goes into full snit mode and delivers hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes, space rocks, and ice ages depending on God's whim. God has been in whimsy mode for ever so long.

But cheer up, while the east Coast of the USA got clobbered, the weather in most of the planet was much much better. By in large proving God is not mad at us all over the planet at the same time, and everyone gets their turn in the barrel. It makes God more democratic that way.

I can remember the winter of 1976&77, when the mid-west was in the deep freeze, and California papers were running Mid-west temperatures on the front pages of their comic sections.

And even better yet, if we can prove its an act of God, our insurance companies don't have to pay up.

I have the antidote. I think all the media is totally untrustworthy, but I am especially skeptical of anything I want to hear. If my radio or screen tells me something I believe to be true I dissect the story viciously and if I find that it was an unjustified claim, I hold my prior belief in lower esteem.

The honest pursuit of ignorance is the only honest way to pursue knowledge.
 
The other thing to say is Backmann has got it wrong, Irene is not the work of God, as Gov. Rick Perry has the better answer in blaming Irene on the Devil.

After all, and it makes some sense, God loves us and the devil does not.

Yeeeup. I've always sneered at that phrase "An act of God" whenever natural disasters are attributed to Him, especially in insurance contracts.

However, as appropriate as I think it is, it does look/sound pretty wierd to have "An act of Satan" in its place.
 
Big f'ing deal. You talk to religious people, everything is a message from God. I am not even religious and don't find anything wrong with what she is saying.

Why are religious people not allowed to say what they want now?
 
A joke is where people say what they really think with a smile on their faces.

Why would anyone "joke" about a hurricane that could kill people and cause billions of dollars worth of damage? That is almost as funny as colon cancer.

Is she going to unequivocally state that a god DID NOT cause a hurricane to "warn" us about fiscal responsibility? What an unbelievably ignorant ass she is. Having a large chunk of our population supporting her is scary stupid.

My guess is she is both just intelligent enough to be dangerous and pathological liar. A similar trait found in many politicians.
 
Much as I dislike Michele Bachmann, in this case the video reveals she was clearly joking. Still, her words were badly chosen, and I don't doubt she might in fact believe what she was saying.
