Yet another year has gone by and no network is running Babylon 5!
WTF is up with that? The greatest (?) space based science fiction arc show has vanished from television?
 
You can watch it all I think online on AOL. Loaded with commercials but I think it's all there. Why pay $$$ to put it on TV?
 
I have all of it on dvd. I recently started watching it again, wow compared to startrek TNG the graphics really sucked in the space scenes. Even decent had better graphics.

And it was our last best hope for a better Science Fiction. It failed.

I personally love Bab5, and am watching it all on DVD again.

TNG didn't have "graphics", they had models.

B5 did have some bad CGI, though I guess that comes with the territory of being the first TV show to really use it. What's really too bad though is the poor transfer to DVD of the CGI shots. There's some story about that... I think they had filmed the show in 'widescreen', but just rendered the CGI in 4:3, figuring they could re-render in whatever widescreen ratio they were using, but then they "lost" all the graphics models, so they couldn't re-render and just had to use what they already had. The DVDs look especially bad on any combined live-action/CGI shots. I've seen some people want to see B5 released on Bluray or whatever, but I don't think they should bother unless they're going to go back and fix all the CGI. If anyone saw the 'Lost Tales' DVD, there's some really nice looking CGI on there that they did really cheaply, I'd love to see the whole series done that way, but it's probably unlikely.

I never saw B5 when it aired on TV, but I went on a B5-watching marathon a few years ago, buying all the DVD sets as they were released and watching them all in a few day long span. It was amazing the first time through. But I tried to watch it again and I couldn't do it. The acting is too wooden and I already know what happens. Honestly, I just couldn't stand Mira Furlan's character the second time through.
 
Great show.. And yeah, the effects are definitely dated.

The Lost Tales did have a couple of moments of great looking CGI, but the stories on it were shit.
 
Watching my Babylon 5 DVDs has unfortunately let me in on the fact that most of the show was very poorly acted.

All but the really high budget sci-fi stuff was that way. Babylon 5, some of the ST series, SeaQuest, etc.

I recall reading an interview with JMS, and he claimed that Star Trek had ten times the budget of B5. This was back when CGI was really expensive.

that reminds me, i bought the complete series when bb had then onsale for $14 each. might be something good to take out and watch while on holiday leave.
 
That show jumped the shark so many times. seriously how many secreted, all powerful, races can there be to lend destruction upon the universe.
