This year was pretty lackluster IMO. I mean, you can really only see 3 possible contenders for best picture (The Departed, Babel, and Letters From Iwo Jima). The other 2 were no more remarkable then dozens of movies this year.

I mean, come on... Little Miss Sunshine? Really? It had a couple of mildly amusing gimmicks, but the end was really disappointing. If a comedy should have made the list this year (and it shouldn't have), than Stranger than Fiction was a better choice. Hell, I would have put Prarie Home Companion in its slot.

As for the Queen, Helen Mirren was really good, but that was about it. The movie was too long, and didn't really suck you in enough.

Oh well. Hopefully next year will be better.

Babel wasn't the worst movie last year, but the only thing I really liked about it was Rinko's performance. Her first time in a major motion picture and she was excellent. Too bad she didn't win.

Sorry to dredge up an oldie.. but I saw Babel today and I thought Rinko was fantastic. The whole concept had me in tears and she pulled it off beautifully. On an interesting note, I saw it without any subtitles - I had to figure out what everyone was talking about by the context. i wished it was originally shown like that - it made the viewing experience fascinating. I only know English, a few words of Japanese and a few words of Spanish.. it was a really cool way to see the film.
