Babel and the O word

Inspired by this thread. We just saw Babel last night and what can I say, it was not a good movie. I loved Crash because the graph of the characters had no leaves.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILERS ***

In other words, in Babel the Japanese gun guy and his daughter were a definite start to the link of characters with no way to loop back. Crash was much more complicated. The feeling I got from Babel was this "pathetically simple story shot out of order in an attempt to look cool". It fell on its face, AFAIC. I didn't feel "emotionally drained" as I saw posters in other threads state; I felt bored. What I did enjoy was seeing different parts of the world shot reasonably well (though the fly-away from the Japanese fam's apartment was sooo cliché).

Anyway the first words out of my mouth at the end? "'The Departed' is winning best picture." For the record, I thought "Little Miss Sunshine" was hilarious, five stars, two thumbs-up, etc but not best pic.

Little Miss Sunshine was too "cute" for me and not enough "funny", but I do think it has the chance to upset I just hope it doesn't. I thought Babel was a GREAT movie and it's funny because I said IT would win Best Picture right after seeing it. I love Scorsese but I thought The Departed was hard to follow and lack-luster, I do hope he wins best director for it even though it's not even in my top 10 of his movies. In all the entire field isn't much to marvel over really, but I would still give it to Babel even if it is such a Crash-like movie. Forrest Whitaker is a lock for Best Actor BTW.

Babel bored the ish out of me and I usually love those sorts of movies. If it wins best picture I'll slit the wrists of a stuffed animal.

Babel is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It ranks up ther with AI and The Thin Red Line.

3 stories loosely connected and neither of them interesting in the least. 2.5 hours was way too long for this boring ass movie. They could have fit it in a 45 min feature film.

Babel was good, but the editing was obnoxious and unnecessary. Example: the scene where Brad Pitt's wife is shot....they cut away from it after like 15 seconds and come back 20 minutes later. Not an effective way to tell a story. And the entire Japanese girl storyline felt forced and didn't fit within the rest of the movie.

And I am someone that LOVED 21 Grams and love movies with multiple story lines (Magnolia had about 9 different stories but it was done much better than Babel).

Babel was good but Amores Perros was better. 21 Grams was my favorite out of the director's trilogy primarily because I felt the connections between the characters were a lot more significant than the loose/practically non-existant ones present in Babel and Amores Perros.

21 Grams was awesome (Magnolia was weeeeird). Don't forget "Memento" (<-- best out-of-order movie ever).

Babel was awful. Too boring and not enough character development. It doesn't work because you frankly don't care about any of them.

When I read 'the O word' I thought this has got to be about The Departed, but since I haven't seen Babel, I can only hope its not so damn corny and over the top with bs as departed.

Right, because IRL gangsters never swear. That movie sounds like most of the days of my life, as far as swearing goes.

lol, I love how ridiculous some of you guys are about movies you simply don't like. Hell, I hated plenty of movies that won awards over the years, but just because I don't like them doesn't mean I don't see why other people would. It also doesn't mean it's "teh w0rst movie EVAR, OMGz!" just because *I* didn't agree with it.

I don't think Babel is overrated. I mean, it wasn't a popular movie...how can it be overrated?

Crap like Ocean 12 is overrated.

I agree that Babel was way overrated. I really don't know how they got Brad Pitt to be in the movie. I feel that if he wasn't in the movie, it would not have even gotten any hype.
