Sarcasm is, imho seductive in that it requires intelligence to pull off well but overtime it becomes like a slow poison to the soul because at it's essence sarcasm is indirectly expressed anger. I can't speak for anybody but myself here but I have enough, work, worry and fear in my own daily life without adding more to it. This place intially looks like fun, particularly if you're sharp witted but over time.. to me anyway, it becomes depressing.

Derek is a good guy on a personal level but he is charged with being the liason between the membership and the unpaid moderator crew.. it is his job. I find it interesting that unpaid moderators are told that if they can't handle the job or don't like dealing with an endless sea of complaints that they can leave.. but the person who's actually paid to do the same thing is not held to the same standards.

Yet another great eye opening post from someone who knows.

Just ask Moonbeam if he agrees that
"Sarcasm is, imho seductive in that it requires intelligence to pull off well but overtime it becomes like a slow poison to the soul because at it's essence sarcasm is indirectly expressed anger."
Most comedians use angry sarcasm as the basis for their comedy bits. Sam Kinison and Dice Clay are good examples that took it a bit over the line into personal therapy territory. While these forums might be public anger management therapy for some who post here, they are poisionous to others who can't deal with the constant hostility, so they move on or never bother to post, and rightly so. If I want to mine futility and depression, I can just turn on the news.

Banned members are allowed back to continue their asshattery, hardly anybody gets put on vacation/banned anymore due to more offensive violations than posting babe threads.

I agree with you 100%.

Hell must have froze over!

I'm sorry but everyone online is not required to be polite to you, and sarcasm is not scary or frightening. ATOT wasn't a wild land full of spam post before the new moderation rules, it was a community of active discussions. It was enjoyable.

It still is, but it is slower, less enjoyable and less knowledgeable.

What do you base this on? New rules are much better and the place is much more civil.

You must not have participated much just a few years ago. At one time OT was hard to keep up with it was so fast. There was as much activity in the middle of the night back then as there is during prime time today. The number of posts per day in OT is mere fraction of what it was 5 years ago. At what cost is it more civil? How long would an adult want to hang out in a day care and be forced to abide by absurdly childish rules?

Sorry, but I remember the ATOT of five years ago, and like I said, it was bit more wild BUT it was a HELL of a lot more intelligent, engaging, exciting and FAR more active.

The new rules are insanely childish and the forum splits make posting an OT topic so it gets the most number of views and thus responses a pain in the ass and not worth it.

YOU may like the new rules, but obviously the silent majority do not, and have voted with their feet.

The squeeky wheels like you may be the loudest, but they are most often the minority. The greatly diminished activity level of OT proves this.

cliftonite: He is basically telling you that since you are not an ADD post count attention whore, you can "Fsck Off and Die" just like his sig indicates.

Then he goes on to admit the forum, or OT in particular, was
"At one time OT was hard to keep up with it was so fast. There was as much activity in the middle of the night back then as there is during prime time today."
Which is exactly why it was a moderator nightmare. It's obvious he has no solutions to this moderator problem.

Then this little gem, which is really what he's all about
"At what cost is it more civil? How long would an adult want to hang out in a day care and be forced to abide by absurdly childish rules?"
which is like saying adults don't have to be civil, they can just moderate themselves and stuff and don't need to abide by any rules. Yea, right. So are you admiting you are acting childish and like that behaviour here, then?

Then he goes on to state:
"Sorry, but I remember the ATOT of five years ago, and like I said, it was bit more wild BUT it was a HELL of a lot more intelligent, engaging, exciting and FAR more active."
Oh really? That must have been during the crazy wild west time when I thought it was not even worth my time to sign up here because of all the dipshit retards posting stupid spam posts non stop just to boost their meaningless post counts for a LOL good time. I finally decided to sign up here because of exactly the direction the MODs were taking the forums in, not vice versa. So your juvenile attempt at rationalization for turning OT and the rest of the forums back into a childish and unmanagable garbage catchall that can't be moderated properly fails utterly.

And if you think that
"The new rules are insanely childish and the forum splits make posting an OT topic so it gets the most number of views and thus responses a pain in the ass and not worth it."
then maybe you need to follow your own advice and
"Fsck Off and Die"
And just in case you misinterpret my feelings
"I'm not being rude. You're just insignificant."
Ahh, just feel all that l:brokenheart:ve.

Then this comment blurts out
"YOU may like the new rules, but obviously the silent majority do not, and have voted with their feet."
And I obviously liked the new rules enough that as a "silent majority" who never posted and just lurked here that I finally decided to sign up and post. I think the true "silent majority" never post or sign up here, and their traffic versus users logged in would obviously prove this. And even though I am now a user here, I still frequently do not log in just to read posts.

And your last post
"The squeeky wheels like you may be the loudest, but they are most often the minority. The greatly diminished activity level of OT proves this."
just proves that that the moderators are doing a good job, and most of the other ADD spaz posters have already moved on to greener spam posting pastures. So what's keeping you here again?
President and Ambivalent Dictator for Life of The Amused Fsck Off and Die Club
oh, yea, that. Gotcha. :p

Wow, I guess you really told me, huh?

Your minority opinion has been duly noted... and ignored.

I'm going to assume that was sarcasm. If not, this place would fall...

If its as bad as some, geekbabe, says it is, then I don't see why anybody would want to be hassled with it. Geekbabe, what was the main reason you quit? was it the never ending bullshit you had to put up with from the member base. Or was it the lack of support from higher ups. Or was it maybe some difference of opinions between the mods on discpline issues. Or was it the rules you had to enforce.

Oh and I liked the forums more overall pre derek changes. The breaking the OT into 4 categories was the main thing I didn't like. P&N can stay out of OT, but the others made it what it was, off topic. You could talk about anything and read about anything from one forum. If you didn't want to read about car stuff, you just would pass over the related threads.

I don't care whether we have babe threads or not, since I see plenty elsewhere, but I found this statement in the OP sort of funny:
At the present time, the goal is to keep OT safer for those surfing from work during their breaks or lunch.

Um, if you're surfing from work, would it not be wise NOT to click on "babe threads" in the first place?

This is generally stupid. Are you guys trying to intentionally keep this forum participation low? Pics/vids is one thing... maybe... though how that has anything to do with "love" or "relationship" is not defined in the english language.

But to start locking down on anything female is retarded. rename the L&R forum to "female" forum then.

Meh, if the general populace is too stupid to know that the Mods don't make the rules then they likely don't have the maturity that goes along with posting material that borders on the risque.

From what I've seen so far from the 'elite member' group, the title really should be 'elitist member'. Seems pretty obvious to me.

Yes. And that comment wasn't pointed at anyone in general... more like everyone in general.

Ah. I'd explain it to you but I really don't have the time to waste on the unwashed.

alas, it would be complained about as being a stud/babe thread although i don't think of Obama that way at all. : /

Oh don't worry about explaining it, like I said in my first post about it, it's pretty obvious.

Well, dennilfloss posted a thread about it yesterday and no one said a word...

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...t_key=y&keyword1=obama

I guess Obama isn't a "babe" or maybe it was because he didn't say he was "attractive" and had "fake boobs"

Idunno, it's so totally random around here.

I agree with the mods on this one. We don't need babe threads here. The internet is full of porn if that is what you're looking for. Anand has been pretty lenient as it is allowing forums like the garage, love and relationships, and OT. I mean first and foremost this is a Tech website, hence the name AnandTECH!

Since every thread I post in instantly becomes a stud thread, the mods made an exception.

No one is looking for porn -- I don't know what gave you idea...

But to not be able to post a thread with an attractive, fully-clothed woman in it is downright ridiculous.

In here, we need a forum specifically touted as.... Don't look/post or you'll get fired Forum!

ATOT already bans displyed pics in threads. So while you're at work why not just be smart and don't clink on links in threads???

Why must everyone be controlled because you want to browse the forums on someone else's dime and not get caught?

I agree with you, it's just that if there was a seperate forum on this, anyone clicking on it couldn't complain or bitch about a damn thing!
