Awful JetBlue experience

Leros

Lifer
I booked a flight from Boston to Austin on the JetBlue website. The only flight went through JFK with a 45 minute layover. Short but doable.

When I got to the airport in Boston, they told me the flight from Boston to JFK was an hour late and I was going to miss the connecting flight. They didn't really give me any other good options. They told me they could put me on standby for the same flight the next day. I asked if they could provide a hotel for the night and they said no. They said it wasn't their responsibility since I decided to book a flight with such a short layover. I thought this was pretty shitty since I booked the only flight available on their site.

I asked if they could get me to a city near Austin and they found a flight for Dallas leaving in an hour. That flight would have cost me half the price to book so I asked if I could get a discount and they literally laughed at me. I sorta jokingly asked if I could at least get a drink voucher and they said no.

The flight to Dallas ended up leaving 3 hours late, I got to Dallas at 1am and had to spend $250 to rent a car and drive the 3 hours to Austin.

Here's the kicker. My original flight to JFK was never late. It was the connecting flight that was an hour late. My layover was actually an hour and 45 minutes.

What is with US based airlines sucking donkey shit as of late? Lufthansa, Polish LOT, and Belavia have excellent service and their food is nothing to complain about.

Most of the time flights are delayed due to weather or flight congestion at the airports.. not the airlines fault. You took the chance by having that close of a connection.. but yeah they should have at least given you a drink or food voucher.

I've never had an issue with Jetblue and have flown somewhere around 50+ legs with them thus far. The obvious issue is that since jetblue runs hub and spoke with only one large hub, if one flight is delayed, it sometimes impacts quite a few flights overall.

It sounds like you were trying to get things for free because of something that may have been out of their control, and it's not really their fault that they wouldn't accommodate you.

The fact that they got their information wrong does suck, and they should have had some controls in place to indicate that. Did you verify the information yourself or take their word for it?

Does it seem like I was trying to get stuff for free that was unreasonable? I've had problems on other airlines but they've always been very accommodating. I've had airlines pay for a flight on another airline when they couldn't reroute me on the same day. I've had airlines pay for a hotel when I had to stay overnight. I've almost always gotten drink vouchers anytime even a mild mishap occurs. I had some expectations given my experiences with other airlines.

JetBlue wasn't even sure I could get a flight the next day and blamed me for a booking the flight suggested by their website.

I never do less than 3 hour layover if i dont do a nonstop flight.

But i almost always buy nonstop flights.

Holy crap, you like spending time in airports or something???

When my wife and I fly, we look for short layovers. Maybe not 45 minutes short, but 1.5 hours or so max if we have to layover somewhere which is usually the case when flying from Omaha. But 3 hours layovers??? Screw that.

the last time i didnt buy a nonstop was like 2002. It's not worth it to cheap out a hundred or 300 bucks just to do a layover.

When i had to do a layover, and it was because i had to fly to Tahiti from the east coast (no direct stop, mandatory layover in LAX), it was pretty much mandatory. Nothing was worth missing the connecting flight. And the airlines scheduled it in a way that buffered enough so that flights dont layover.

You missing a layover flight really has nothing to do wiht the airline, Jetblue or otherwise. You rolled the dice that everything will fall in line and lost. This can be said for any coordination of efforts. Flights, projects, etc

They're in the wrong for giving you incorrect information, but other than that you can't really blame them too much.

Flights get delayed all the time for reasons that are outside of the airline's control. So I don't really see why by default they have to compensate/offer you free stuff for that.

If you think about it, giving you stuff is actually kind of unfair to people who fly direct, since they wouldn't get anything out of experiencing a flight delay.

That sucks man ...

That said, I try at all costs to avoid layovers / connecting flights.

I understand in some situations it's unavoidable, but in most cases, if you are going from one major city to another in the US, there's most likely at least 2 or 3 different direct flights.

you know it must be nice only flying places that have nonstop flights

because that's pretty close to impossible for most people

as for layovers, 3 hours is insane, 2 at the most

my layovers when flying to/back from Taiwan were under an hour, was great and nothing got lost.

You do realize that airlines don't necessarily have a non stop flight between every location they fly from/to?

If he's rich enough to afford to be able to spend hundreds more for non stop flights, he's probably rich enough to charter a private jet for places where non stop flights aren't available 🙂

Money isn't as big of a deal as where he lives. If you live in a hub city, it's not a problem to find non-stop flights.

Where I live, you have 1 hop minimum to get to all but 2 major cities...and possibly more if you're going transconinental.

What's bad is the regional carriers here are often using all available equipment so we often lose our planes to other destinations when they have technical problems. I've been delayed 3-5 hours before waiting on a plane to show up after they gave our plane to another flight. (usually based on distance from the hub) 🙁

Airlines don't put people up in hotels anymore due to delays. The last time I had that happen was 2002. Since then, I've only spent 1 night in a terminal on a cot. The rest of the time, I've been fortunate to miss bad weather and only have issues on my last hop home.

for Hub to Hub yes, but even when I lived in Boston there were places I went where a direct flight from the east coast did not exist unless you charted a private plane

whoa whoa. hold on.

wait a minute.

hold the phone.

stop the press.

whoa.

time out.

i thought we were all millionaires here?

I use to love Jet Blue. Now they are pretty ghetto and craptastic.

Virgin America is actually quite good.

Delta, the rest, etc; total piles of shit.

Bah effing website saved the departure date from my last search. Still a one way ticket was less than the car rental at 200 bucks.

Ticket agents in the same city you are in NEVER have the correct info on connecting flights. The problem is built into their system management. If you want the latest and best info on connecting flights, call the city it's coming from.

P.S. Everyone thinks "on time" or "late " screens are real time feeds. They are not and, must be updated and approved by personnel who typically have more important things to do when the shit hits the fan.
