50K for petro engineers, yes.

50K for general study in this economy? Dream on.

Back when I attended college, the university's published "Graduate Starting Salaries" were based on alumni who volunteered to report their employment [offer] details, which I imagine skewed the results.

That's been my experience too. The people that want to brag about their high pay respond to the survey, the ones that are are working for peanuts don't answer.

I bet it's the average of salaries of people who actually got jobs. If you take the average of all graduates, you have a whole lot of $0/yr in there that'll drag the average waaaaay down.

That sounds pretty high, no way liberal arts majors are averaging $50k. Most of them are working as baristas at Starbucks, did the surveyed employers include Starbucks or BestBuy? (I am not talking about corporate jobs either).

You should read this survey as: If (that is a big if) you can get a job at one of the surveyed the companies (usually well-paying prominent companies), you may average 50k. For the rest of you (more than half), there is no hope and you better be living with your parents while geek squading at BestBuy.

Be responsible with your money and you can easily live comfortably in most cities.

It really depends on what you mean by living comfortably.

Most people think living comfortably means they gotta have a BMW M3, 3 bedroom apt on top floor of a 30+ floor building, and many more perks including hookers & blow.

(60 hours / week) * (52.14 weeks / year) * ($30 / hour) = $93 852. Assuming they are paid while on vacation (less otherwise).

I sure hope you put more effort into the rest of your life. ;)

Canada has different labor laws than the US. You are paid a minimum of 1.5x hourly for anything over 8 hours in a day or 44 hours in a week. If you're union you'll likely get 2x pay. On a stat holiday with a union you might get 3x pay if your job is critically important (working at an oil refinery). Most jobs with lots of hours are generally 12 hour days for 5 days instead of spreading it out over 6 days. I don't think employers are allowed to make people work 7 days per week every week.

[40 + (20*1.5)] * 30 * 52 = $109,200

Min. wage is $7.25 Hr., right?
So: 7.25 x 40= $290 x 52 = $15,080:biggrin:

Edit, my math may be wrong, I am exhausted!
