Average pay for people in their mid 20s?

I'm 23, don't have a degree (yet) and make about $34k. My boss is trying to get my pay increased to about $40k, so that will *probably* be my pay rate in a month or so.

I've got another year or so of classes left, so we'll see what happens with my pay after I graduate.

Good point.. 80k! Ack! It just really blows to see half of your pay taken away due to taxes. Most of my friends have jobs as waiters, etc. but they seem to be doing fine - they party, dress well, etc. but I'm struggling - I guess I have to learn how to manage what I have better since the rate seems fair.

Get a JD, work in a nyc law firm, get 125k a year. That's the way to do it.

And prepare to work your ass off with ridiculous hours. Stories of 18 hour workdays make me cringe.

40k, just turned 23, QA analyst...

but honestly...with all my bills and what not, im practically living paycheck to paycheck...with car payments, insurance, gym, and rent...sigh..

Sometimes. However, on the whole it's not that bad. For the money, it's worth doing for a few years - then move on. It's a great door-opener.

Yeah I agree it's definitely not bad to do for a few years when you're younger, as it's just killer on your resume.

In many ways though, I'm glad that my g/f (who's a lawyer) chose to have a more "stable" 8:30-6:30 job at the law firm she works at. I still do enjoy actually having time to spend with her. 😀

Ah, I see you're a fellow NYU student. (Class of 2000 here). Cool. I'm heading back to NYU this Sat. actually for this cool conference they're having.

25, BS in CS making mid 70s in NYC. W/ cost of living so high here, it really isn't a lot of money.

Left my previous job which offered me mid 80s to stay plus bonus which would've pushed me into 6 figures. Wasn't worth the pain and mental anguish and career deadend.

I am in finance/technology and consider myself average.

If you have the goods, the pay can easily go into the low 100s.

Those of you in NYC who say cost of living is so high, how much are yall paying a month for rent and bills?

Im very intersted in hearing this. Im moving to Austin in June to start my fulltime job with a CS degree and im paying $675 for a 900 sq feet one bedroom with WD included. I dont expect to pay more than 100 extra for bills and internet.

I have some friends who live in NYC and they pay obscene amounts for everything. I live in Columbus, OH, so take that as my point of reference. They have a 2 bedroom apartment in the low to decent part of town and pay over $2000 a month in rent...IN RENT!! Of course everytime I see them all they talk about is how great it is to live in NYC. Whatever. I pay $700 for the mortage on my house and its twice the size of their apartment if not bigger. Oh I also don't have to climb five flights of stairs to get to my house.

In addition, I have a BA & a BS and I work in IT doing mostly systems/network administration. I make $52500 with fully paid benefits. Very good money for Columbus, OH.

Right now....1150 for a tiny a$$ studio in midtown. 60 bucks for utility, 45 for timewarner internet...the apartment can't be any bigger than 15*15 although its just a rough estimate.
