Critics are notoriously stodgy when it comes to special effects driven otherwise lackluster movies. That they've almost universally recommended this film despite the copious CGI should tell you something. And yes, this is probably the movie event of the decade, with heavy emphasis on "event". Groundbreaking 3D and CGI from James Cameron on a 70 foot Imax screen deserves any cinema fan's dollars, especially those that pay to see Old Dogs. For those not inclined, sure, you can netflix it later, but if the high point of the film is the spectacle and not the story, why the hell would you even bother? Your home entertainment system might be really nice, but it's not a movie theater.

Even Ebert who has been critical of effects heavy films and 3D in general for years literally gushes in his review.

Avatar most definitely kept me in my seat for the entire 162 minute running time without complaint.

Exactly. At home I don't have to step in gum, smell the fat smelly bastard that ventured out of his command center (mother's basement), and shell out money to listen to audio through a blown speaker somewhere, a small tear in the screen and a screaming child.

How's that in home 3D working for you?

[redbox] I'll definitely have to invest in seeing it then. [/redbox]

[streaming netflix 2012] If it's sold out when I get the chance, there's always a plan B. This definitely sounds like a must see. [/streaming netflix 2012]

I can't believe people are getting psyched by this movie. The CGI is so over the top and the plot is the same shit we've seen 100 times at this point. I can't possibly how this movie will be entertaining, except to go and see it crash and burn.

this. Completely agree. Looks like absolute garbage. Over the top effects and no plot...didn't they do that with the last 3 star wars movies?

Also, people need to realize that yes, technology in movies and games has sort of become 'the bane', however tech demos aren't all a bad thing. And when they are done right, they can be that next amazing thing. It's the impending line of followers you have to worry about.

I hope you're aware the adult theaters you normally frequent are not going to be showing Avatar!

It's gonna be one of the few treats I get over the holiday season. I'm not going in expecting Schindler's List, or even Rudy, but something along the lines of the new Star Trek movie, or something I can turn my brain off, enjoy the visuals, and hope that the plot isn't as tissue paper thin as it seems to be coming across as.
I've probably seen much worse movies, and I hit 2 - 3 movies a year max.

Sure a lot of bitches in here who haven't even seen the frickin movie. lulz. Some of you sound like real fun people to be around.

It's much easier to criticize than to praise.

Hey - if people want to wait and netflix it - by all means, rawr to them! Star Wars also looks awesome on a 13" set top tv. /smirk

Personally - I'd rather see the movie on an IMAX screen in 3d - but I'm a cheap bastard - so I'll wait until the hype is over and it's at the matinee price. :)

The most memorable movie watching experiences for me have been in the theater on large screens - Dune, Star Wars, Aliens [when I was obviously too young to see it - I still have nightmares about the alien popping out of the egg], 300 on Imax [holy crap - that was freakin awesome], etc - you just can't get that kind of experience on a home system [well.. not unless you have your own personal movie theater].

Of all the critics, I've always put more stock on Roger Ebert than anyone else and he sold me with his first sentence:

"Watching "Avatar," I felt sort of the same as when I saw "Star Wars" in 1977."

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20091211/REVIEWS/912119998

It may be that this movie is nothing but special effects with no substance/story but once in a while on very rare occasions, it is still worth the price of the ticket. This was filmed with revolutionary new film technology. I was not born to experience Star Wars in 1977 but if Ebert is right, I don't want to miss out on this opportunity. I may not get it again. A movie can still be somewhat epic without much substance, it's almost impossible but if anyone can pull it off, it's Cameron.

edit: I also want to add that maybe the trailers did not do the movie justice as far as story goes. Maybe the marketing team decided to hype the cgi to fuel interest and it backfired. All of the movies Cameron has written and directed has always had a solid story.

doesnt the movie come out in 4 days!?

Is there a leaked copy that people have seen it already!?

if so, LINK?

Premieres and pre-screeners. You'd prob have to be in the industry to get to see it before opening day.

Yea all you need is the $200 set, a high end desktop, and a compatible monitor (most TVs aren't) and still end up with eye strain because of the lcd shutter technology.

Or you could just fork over the $10 to see it in a theatre.

Whatever happened to the days when people would just view a movie and judge for themselves rather than fucking theorycrafting off movie critics.

Christ it makes me want to choke a bitch.

I know Cameron has a fantastic history, I know these fantastic reviews are coming out, but I just can't believe it. It looks so.. bad.
