If you read the reviews they all have a very similar message. In terms of special effects, it's amazing but as a movie it's meh.

I'll still probably check it out.

Not convinced yet. There aren't enough reviewers yet. Only 6 Top Critics so far. Roger Ebert likes it and I generally like his reviews but he is often far too generous in my mind. After reading his review I have less hope for this than before reading it.

EDIT: Fuck it though it'll still probably check it out :( Yay for marketing and sheeple!

I can't believe people are getting psyched by this movie. The CGI is so over the top and the plot is the same shit we've seen 100 times at this point. I can't possibly how this movie will be entertaining, except to go and see it crash and burn.

Easy just follow the following recipe:

Ingredients:

Famous blockbuster director who can't make a mistake in the media's eyes
2-$300 million
hype
salty hype
sweet hype
sour hype
spicy hype
umami hype
"bribes"
Gullible critics

Directions

Take director and sprinkle liberally with millions. Place in oven to bake for 10 years. Stir in liberal quantities of hype. Make sure to serve to all critics early and add a liberal side serving of "bribes".

You forgot the secret ingredient:
CGI
Didn't you know that enough CGI can fix bad acting/plot?

I hope you're just playing dumb, but seriously, how oblivious can you be? Nearly everything James Cameron touches is gold.

Terminator
Terminator 2
Aliens
The Abyss (one of my personal favorites)
True Lies
Titanic (didn't particularly care for the sappy parts, but was an overall good movie)

NO SHIT that people would want to see his latest

The point of this movie is to press new technology. Let's all hope it does well. Stop focusing so much on what you want it to be and realize what it actually is and maybe you can *gasp* enjoy yourself.

I honestly don't get the hype at all, I'm with you. This movie just look really terrible to me. I'm willing to admit I'm wrong if it turns out good, but I'm not paying to see it at a cinema.

So you're saying we should lower our expectations as far as plot and character depth go because it's... ahem... a "tech demo"?

Yeah, someone is blowing smoke big time for this movie...

From RT:

Review:
Never, and I mean never, have I been touched by a film like this.

Answer:
I can only hope that this was your first movie or you happen to be 6.
I can only think of about eight thousand movies with more emotional impact than this popcorn flick.
So either you have the depth of a puddle or need to see some more movies.

LoL

This is the way I feel as well. This is just some bullshit story, totally disconnected from reality about some totally imaginative problems and dilemmas done for "only" 300 million dollars.

Si-Fi movies can be good though - District 9 being a good example for a good Si-Fi story that we can somehow relate to.
And $ 300 million....Jezz, please...

Hah, that's pretty sad if this is the 'movie event of the year or perhaps the decade'. Even the positive reviews mention that the plot and characters are pretty thin.

From 'positive' reviews :

"A movie whose effects are clearly revolutionary, a spectacle that millions will find adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film.

An amazing visual achievement, slightly hampered by routine narrative and cardboard characterizatons

As visual spectacle, Avatar is indelible, but as a movie it all but evaporates as you watch it.

AVATAR, while a perfectly fine flick, doesn't even begin to compare to his other films. While it`s certainly cutting edge, it feels like too much time was put into working out the visual side of the film, and not enough spent on substance. Emotionally, this felt hollow. It should have been stirring, but it`s not

Look no further than Titanic which got 82% on RT.

It is a shame really. This movie is going to make a ton of money. Largely from ticket sales to people who think nothing of slamming Bay or Emmerich for making visually stunning movies with crap story lines.

ID4, Transformers 1&2, 2012, Titanic and Avatar. All the same class of movies IMHO.

Don't get me wrong. There is certainly nothing wrong with making those types of movies. I have enjoyed a few of those myself. But unfortunately all the commercial and critical success Avatar is bound to get will only encourage more junk movies instead of studios, directors and writers trying for something better.

Wow, so much work to show your distaste for this movie. Don't go watch it then, but I bet you will.

Thanks. Now I know exactly what to expect. Lots of GFX and a mediocre story. I will go see it on IMAX if possible though.

Yeah I have no problem with a great visual spectacle, I just think people have to have the right expectations. I'll probably check it out eventually myself, but I'm not expecting an oscar-caliber story or acting.

It's hard to tell what to think from Critics views on a Movie. Even those talking about the Movies short comings still seem quite overwhelmed by other aspects of the movie, it could simply not matter.

Then again, Children of Men was so freakishly over hyped and I was so tragically let down by it. So really, You/Me are the only Critics who really matter, but we really need to see the Movie before knowing whether we'd like it or not.
