Cameron is so ultra picky about presentation I highly doubt Avatar will see a 3D video release anytime soon.

Since the theatrical has already cracked $1B global gross (to position #4 no less), is alreay #15 in US top grossers, and has started to take down Titanic records for progressive weeks in the run I think Fox is going to do whatever he wants to get the next couple movies out of him.

he specification is technology-agnostic when it comes to how to create the 3D effect. It will deliver two 1080p frames to the display, and the display will then use whatever method it can to create a 3D effect—whether it's passive filtered glasses, active filtered switching glasses, anaglyph, etc.

That's my favorite part about that new method...

I just cannot wait for the new displays to start coming out, and then, to be affordable.

i think the 3D detracted from it, made it more difficult to watch because it was harder to take in some of the background when the director wanted focus on something specific.

didn't help that the 3D glasses were filthy.

imax 3d

edit: a friend of mine who saw it in imax3d and on a regular screen said imax3d was much better. so maybe it's just the filthy glasses that did it. we also watched it from way off to the side near the front, so that probably didn't help much.

I actually watched it once with Dolby and once with RealD. When I was fooling around with the glasses before the movie started (looking at things through each lens, looking through 2 sets of glasses at different angles etc), the color difference with Dolby was obvious, but once the movie started it looked fine. If anything Dolby was less flickery, but that was probably just my imagination since I think that both technologies run at an effective 24 fps per eye.

The story may have had a number of cliches, but it wasn't nearly as bad as some people seem to think. All in all, a great flick. I do have to wonder where they're going to find a plausible premise for a sequel, though. Because there WILL be sequels.

wtf would the second one be about? more furry fucking?

How is it furry if they don't have any fur?

I felt the same. 3D didn't make the movie any better and detracted from it many times. There were only 2 shots in the whole film that made me think it was better in 3D. Everything else just had panning problems and crappy blurriness. The movie is good without 3D and just a gimmick like motion controls.

IMAX glasses are reused so if they aren't cleaned properly that will happen. The closer you are to center of the auditorium the better the 3D effect will be.

Some of the newer RealD XL digital systems rival the new IMAX digital installations as far as presentation goes.

Finally saw it today in Real3D at a Movie Tavern for $8 - thought it was great. Story was flimsy as hell but more than made up for it technically.

I kept thinking the large battleship was a fat dropship from Aliens and that pilot = Vasquez heh.

Thought they'd be cleaned, but when some guy/girl is paid minimum wage to go through a few hundred glasses a day, someone's probably going to start half-assing.

Don't know why they bother sealing all of the glasses. Glad they do cause I dropped mines on the coke filled floor.

They are supposed to be cleaned between uses but that depends on staff to make sure it gets done right.

Other 3D systems use disposable glasses that are recycled after use. They come sealed in plastic so nothing can happen to them before you open it.

BoxOfficeMojo has Avatar beating Dark Knight all time already.... wow.

How much more did Avatar cost to make compared to Dark Knight?

EDIT:
Avatar $500,000,000 (1/2 billion)
Dark Knight $180,000,000

Are the glasses the same as the ones they give you at the Disney movies like Up and stuff? I watched Up and Bolt in 3D, and they were the crappy disposable ones.

I watched Avatar overseas and they gave us heavy duty ones where you gotta clean. They showed me some drops on my glasses and my friend's and said that was from the disinfecting cleaning, and not to worry about it. Didn't bother me at all.
