Yeah, I saw that on Wiki too. Big difference. I wonder who's right?

The New York Times article that spouted the $500 million added in additional costs like marketing which people typically never add in when they talk about how much a movie costs. The $237 million are the production costs.

This thread isn't about your very important personal opinion on why or why not you're going to be watching the film, it's about if Avatar is a bust at the box office.

I've heard rumors that when Avatars goes to theaters in China (January 1st) that it might pull big enough numbers there alone to cover its production (300-400 million), so yeah I'm going with "it will make bank" crowd.

Lol, fucktards saying it's anti American. They fail. All of them. It's American to have freedom of speech and this movie demonstrates that! D:. Anyways, if being American is basically raping someones land, kicking them out, killing them, and stuff, then the guy did the right thing by going against his country and stopping the bullshit. I would like to think it's American to do the right thing, and I know he did.

I am boycotting this movie. I hope Cameron loses his shirt over making this piece of shit of a film.

You seem to be missing an important element here.
It cost lots to make, yes.
The current box office gross is a bit behind some other films, yes (hm, notice they they are almost all sequels?).

Now, imagine Cameron makes a sequel.
Since the first was well received, the second will probably do better, plus he's already invested in all the tech.

The only way it can truly be a bust is by not making back the production costs AND by not having a sequel.

wtf would the second one be about? more furry fucking?

I'm pretty sure that movies as big as this keep about 70-80% of ticket sales (possibly more, can't remember) the first week or 2 , then it goes down from there. Not sure what it goes down to, but pretty sure the studio keeps more than 50% on average on such large movies.

Considering it's only been out a couple of weeks, then blue ray, dvd, hbo, etc., it will surely make a profit if it hasn't already.

You obviously haven't been keeping up to date on ATOT Avatar threads...

i think people are idiots to boycot this flick based on what others are saying without making up their own minds about it so it's their loss not to see it.

and i agree, this is anti-corporate, not anti-us. and the mercs are equevilent to blackwater and not to the US military.

Lol that thread is the gift that keeps on giving. OTOH, it is bad enough to be moved into P&N territory. Don't know how it's stayed in OT so long.

A 3% drop to post $75M for the weekend, even besting Sherlock Holmes.

Avatar is most decidedly not a bust.

My gf's brother and I went for the show day couple of nights ago. The place had 4 screens running Avatar - and all the next 4 shows for the rest of the night were sold out. Just as we were about to leave, they announced extra show times for Avatar starting at 1:15am - we were lucky to get 2 tickets and after a while even those extra show times got sold out.

This one is gonna make bank

I was at the Imax at 10:30 last night and it was packed. Every showing all day was sold out. It's not a bust. I haven't seen a theater that busy in a long time.
