This is not always the case. My 2003 PT had a shortcut to read the codes (involved turning the key in a certain pattern). Very useful.

yep.. i have one and it works well.

Also, my 96 maxima worked by turning the screw on the side of the PCM under the heater area. and it was obdcII.

yup, On my 2004 Toyota, I just have to jumper between 2 slots on the OBD port to get the code. I'd get your self a repair manual as it will tell you what you need to do to get the code. cost about $20 and may come in handy in the future.
