I drive a '87 Oldsmobile Nighty-Eight Regency Brougham (mouthfull) with my mom since I only have a permit ;) (don't start that again :)) Anyways, i'm going on a slight hill 50MPH is the limit. I'm going 40 so I decide to pick up the speed. I give it more gas and I don't go any faster! It changes gear with a big clunk then I start acclerating a bit faster. Damn automatics..:( I hope with stick I can switch gears and get to the power band..

To force an auto to shift, floor the gas. Your mom might not like it, but it'll force it into a better gear.

I know how you feel, though, auto's suck ass.

My 1986 Parisienne (5 liter Chevy 305 :D) did the same thing before my dad got the plugs changed.
Now, it pulls all the way from 80-150kmh nicely (80-110 is slow though).
Get a tuneup and pop in a bottle of oil and gas treatment.
New car will be waiting for ya ;)

If he gets a manual, we'll have to listen to him whine about how he can't drive a stick, or how's the best way to shift, or how fast should I go before I change from gear a to b??? :)

<< Were you in Overdrive? >>

Don't think there is a "Over-Drive"

It goes like this

P R N "Big-D" "Small-D" 1 2

Most males are well versed in the manipulation of their sticks before they're old enough to drive.

Big D is Over Drive

Stay out of that unless you will be constantly cruising 55 or over anyhow or your wear out your belts and your probably Lugging the motor when you hit those hills like that stay in Small d

my father taught me how to drive stick when I was 14yrs old. I am now 19 and on my 4th car. All 4 of my cars have been Manual and I will never own an Automatic unless I lose an arm or something!

Thats cool and in the car world I'd be the same way but with trucks since your dealing with massive amounts of Torque amd also towing Auto's in the GM line especially have been the way better choice. the new Allison 1000 for the GM Heavy Duties is the ONLY way to go. The Manuel doesn't harness as much power.

Then why, pray tell, are all the big-rigs manual?

:p

Automatic transmissions suck power to no end, a 120 hp engine with a 5 speed manual will be reasonably fun to drive, while the same engine with a 3 speed auto will SUCK.

I think stepping slightly on the brake gives the computer the message "get out of overdrive" so you may accelerate faster for a brief period of time. at least that's what i heard.

and the first D with the black (maybe white) space around it should be overdrive.

PS. on a side note, i put synthetic oil in my car last oil change and it feels much more livelier than normal. is that supposed to happen? ;)

The Big D is a D with another D around it. The small one is just a regular D.

FYI, the clutch on the BMWs are hard.

Ok. I should be cruising in the small D right? Is the Big-D just more torque?

I only drive Light Duty trucks, Surely there is someone here with a CDL that can answer that better then me.

Its not the auto, its the car, it would be slow with a 6 speed. its a tank with no power :)

Because a 13 speed automatic tranny would be too hard to build. It is correct that an automatic is better for towing, if you look at tow ratings for identical pickups, only difference being one is an automatic and the other is manual, the truck equipped with an automatic will have a few hundred more pounds listed for tow capacity. BTW, 13 speeds is a conservative estimate for a semi, semis used in hilly country or to pull large loads can have up to 21 gears. An automatic simply can't match the amount of ratios available in a standard transmission.
